Wing Commander Movie: Was it REALLY THAT BAD?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Wing Commander Movie: Was it REALLY THAT BAD?

I saw it in the theaters with my cousin, I have it on home video, and I'm watching it on TV right now. Now, we all know it didn't meet the enormous potential it had from the moment Chris Roberts took the directorial helm, but was it REALLY THAT BAD?

Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Matthew Lillard were not the best choices for Blair and Maniac, respectively, and Safron Burrows was not the best choice for Angel. And let us not even touch the Paladin issue with a ten-foot pole. I'll just say that you can't substitute a short Frenchman for a large Scotsman and I'll leave it at that. Now, even with such bad choices for the cast, the movie still had potential.

I've made this post because I want to know what everyone (who has seen it) thinks ruined the movie.

Personally, I hope one day Chris Roberts can make a sequel. It is my hope that somone here might have some way to contact him and convey our thoughts on the issue. In addition, I am going to post a topic asking for everyone's suggestions for a sequel to the movie, including plot ideas, cast choices, and anything else you might be able to think of.

I would like to ask the moderators to check on these two topics from time to time and see if they are popular enough to warrant being stickied.

Thank you all for you help and I look forward to all your thoughts.

Yes, it was. Our hopes now lie in one live-action TV show, somewhere out there in post-production.

Uh, yes. Kind of like 90210 except in space.

To me, it looked like it was made by a bunch of amateurs - concerning both actors and makers. I was disappointed. Another example of a badd realisation of a good idea

I like the movie... i own it on DVD and watched it 5 times by now.

I really don't understand why it has to be a 1:1 adaptation in order to be liked by the fans. I don't wanna see the games i already know on the screen. That would be boring, i wan't a new story and new things that stick to the spirit of the game. That's the case with Wing Commander and that's why i like Tomb Raider and Resident Evil very much as well.

I remember MS's Thread on the subject, those were the days

Let's see, No Iceman, Spirit, Tiger's Claw renamed Tiger Claw, Skipper in when time (flim set around WC I, Skipper didn't appear till WC III), Blair and Maniac are wrong ranks, should be Second Lieutenants not First Lieutenant's, need I go on.

I agree that the movie is ok, I have it on VHS, only vost me £7.99.

The movie was indeed very bad The movie had a poor story (I still don´t know how they could have screwed that one up when the entire WC game series, fan fiction, all the books etc. had such rich and powerful stories), some characters didn´t match with the original stories, the worse casting ever seen in a movie (*cough* Freddie Prince Jr. *cough*) and the worst thing.......the cheesy looking Kilrathi !!! I mean Holy Mother of God....I have never seen costums in a movie that looked this hideous. Furthermore, there was much more wrong with it, as been listed by Top Gun and others.

In short:

-bad script
-a few wrong characters
-wrong casting
-bad looking CGI
-ships no correct
etc. etc.

I really keep my fingers crossed for the live-action television series Chris Roberts is working on.

I liked it. A lot. That makes me weird, I guess. But I think you guys are too fixated on the game storyline!. Who tf cares if it's Tiger's Claw in the game and Tiger Claw in the movie?

I quess it's hard for Die-Hard fans of the games to look at the Movie in that way.

I think since they used the Wing Commander name they should have kept it in line with the game series. They should have called it Wing Commander: (Insert subtitle here) since they went and changed the Rapier design and such.

I have to agree with the Kilrathi costumes. They SUCKED! I saw it and I almost cried because it was so disturbing to see such a sight. I was deeply hurt by the change in costume between WC 3 an 4. But at least in the game I could kind of understand, I mean, Melek was no longer a militant. He became a pacifist, so I can see why they would change the costume a little, but even still. It was too radical a change for me. And the Skipper Missile shouldn't have been there. It looked like they tried to mesh all three Klrathi Episodes together into a movie, but it just left too much out.

Although, I have to wonder if maybe they were expecting it to be a great hit and were planning to fill in the blanks in a sequel.

I still hope they make a sequel, but I think it would be a REALLY good idea to acknowledge the fans and pick a select few (hopefully including me) to review the screenplay and offer our feedback. I'm not sayingthey need to include us in shooting, although that would be really awesome. But they should at least let us tell 'em what they're doin' wrong. I mean, we are the ones whose entertainment rests in their hands.

And I still wanna know more about this TV series. Will it hold the Wing Commander name?

Well acording to some sources the Rapier in the movie, is an older model than the one in the game. Not sure how true this is

Eh, I didn't like the movie all that much. I did see it twice in theatres just because it was Wing Commander and I wanted to support it... but to be honest, I loved the games and I don't think the movie did them much justice.

I do hope Chris Robert's does well with the new project he's making, a series I suppose... I have hope anyway!
