ELITE - Share Your Memories
How many remember the following ....?
1. Having the cassette version of Elite for the BBC B, and wanting a 5.25" disk drive for the simple fact that you wanted the disk version of Elite. Remember looking at the ship descriptions at the back of the original manual and realising that the cassette version only had a handful of ships like the Mamba, Sidewinder, Python etc. The disk version contained ALL the ships in the manual. Didn't the disk version also have the 'Dodec' stations in some of the richer systems that had replaced the 'Coriolis' stations?
2. Searching for the alleged 'space graveyard' that the novella 'The Dark Wheel' (originally bundled with the Elite package) said existed in the Tionisla system between it's planet and it's star.
3. Excessive use of the 'j' key whilst trying to accelerate time as you have Narcotics. Firearms, Slaves in the crago hold and are in a Feudal or Anarchy System.
4. Getting trapped in hyperspace by Thargoids and you are a million miles from nowhere. (That was the one feature of the game that taught me to save often).
5. Watching an Anaconda docking.
6. Attacking a space station because you were bored and wanting to see how many Police Vipers you could waste.
7. The first time you were low on fuel and 'skimmed' some off the system's sun with the fuel scoops.
8. Trying to perfect docking with those spinning space stations, or at least until you can afford a docking computer.
9. Trying to find the 'Generation Ships' and 'Space Dredgers' that are mentioned in the manual, then finding out years later that they never even existed. (Rock Hermits did however, in later versions).
10. Blasting the stream of planetary shuttles that were sometimes seen between planet and station.
11. The Core Systems and their names : Lave, Leesti, Diso, Tionisla, Zaonce, Riedquat etc.
12. Ever remember how their seemed to always be more Mambas in Reorte ? I know the manual mentioned that they were made there, so guess it figures.
13. Seeing your first Fer-de-Lance lightspeeder and knowing that you just stumbled on a bounty hunter.
14. Achieveing Elite status.
15. The Infamous Music. (The Blue Danube By Strauss)
There are many many more, but I just wanted to start a thread so I could hear your experiences of this, that is in my view, still the greatest space sim of all time.
