I guess its personal preference or maybee im stuck in my ways

when playing elite it was keys of course

but wing commander series played to death..with joystick,
freespace 1, 2, and independance wars series ditto, its hard
to get used to the change.

Glad i tried the game though, wasnt initially going to buy it cos
no joystick

You guys confuse me. I use free flight for almost everything in the game. My mouse has extra buttons that I can use for missiles (though by now I'm not using them so much anymore) ... There are a few instances where I will hold down the mouse button to turn, btu that's only if I'm in "go to" mode or if I don't want the ship to turn as I click on an icon.

Actually, the way I mormally do it, I hit space to turn and fly the ship around - with my trackball I feel a hell of a lot more control in free flight then I do having to hold a button down - and then I hit space so the ship levels out and heads straight where I want it. If I then want to turn, I hit space again to adjust course and stuff. Sometimes I can hust use the mouse button for a minor course correction, but I got in the habit of flying straight toward an object or waypoint in mouse mode, then hitting space to turn and fight enemies ... Now it's just second nature to hit space whenever I need to turn around. Might sound tedious, but it;s really not.

I cant imagine trying to actually FIGHT in mouse mode...

To elle ... At first I wanted joystick support too ... or shall I clarify ... GAMEPAD support. Joysticks don't work too well for me - in Freespace I use a Wingman Rumblepad - But anyway, somehow the mouse works great in Freelancer.

Still, there are newer games coming out that use the mouse as well, and I really do look forward to a NEW game that I can use my pad with.

lol i must have something wrong with me,

i just seem to have far less..coordination with a mouse.

With a joystick i can judge leaders instinctively, and can map commands
to the buttons.

With a mouse i dont get the feeling its 'real' i just feel like im pointing and clicking.

Still, mouse aside im pretty hooked on the MP side atm

I never utilize Free Flight, I find it awkward and inefficient, I have no clue how you could handle it without colliding with every planet and object in the system. I generally dislike joysticks and gamepads, due to the fact that consistent configuration and modification is required. Additionally, they are consistently defective, or improperly functioning (in my expierience at least). Finally, they are often expensive and incompatible with many new systems. In fact, I haven't utilized a joystick/gamepad in years.
