Don''t find ships in shiparch!

Hi people!

I have quite an annoying problem:
I have downloaded the TNG mod and it's all fine and I love it, but I wanted to change the cargo spaces of some of the ships (e.g. the Star Wars-Corvette freighter).

So I opened the shiparch (Freelancer\DATA\SHIPS) and I searched for the ships' entry by keyword search (I tried cor, corvette and so on). Then I tried it with the shiparch in the TNG directory (Freelancer\Tng160final\data\Ships). Nothing there either...

Now I'm asking you: Are custom ships in the shiparch at all??? There must be a way to edit them, how should the creators of the mod have done it then?
Please help!!!

Greetings,
Jason Kelp

Yes, the TNG files are encoded.

As I understand it, (and there have been quite a few words spent on this whole idea- check Starfyre Studios for all the sordid details) Reynen and his team did that precisely to ensure that everyone who plays TNG has a level field, and to prevent simple hacking.

and as I know Reynen stops by here from time to time, he might give you a better worded reply than my own.

Very sad... *sniff*

Hhhm... Then there is no way to decrypt them? I don't want to play it in multiplayer or so, I'm a singleplayer, I just want logical cargo spaces... Hhhm. I'll check the starfyre forums... Anyway, Thanks a lot, I think searching any longer would have made me drive up the wall!

I think the TNG mod was the one that was a bit clever. If you opened up stuff like constants.ini and altered the cruise speed, it would make no difference. To solve the problem, open up "Freelancer.ini" in the EXE folder, and look at what files are assigned to what. The section you're looking for starts like this: (in the TNG Freelancer.ini)

asteroids = solar\asteroidarch.ini
equipment = equipment\light_equip.ini
equipment = equipment\select_equip.ini
equipment = Solar\dockable\asteroid_base.cmp
equipment = Equipment\models\commodities\nn_icons\special.3db

Notice that the last two equipment files are not ini files, and don't look like anything to do with equipment. Nonetheless, open them up with Notepad and you'll have what you want. In your specific case, the ship file is:

characters\Bodies\new_male_body.dfm

but bear in mind that I have an old version of TNG, it may be different.

lol, ya, that's fun stuff, even better tho was when some of us 'old' modders decided to really have fun with you ini peepers and decided to use a different file then the freelancer.ini for it, instead what was called an infocard.dll was the real freelancer.ini, and the file called freelancer.ini was changed just to put people on a wild goosechase when they look into it. Actually I had did that to stop datastorm more so then people looking in the ini's, cause datastorm relied on the freelancer.ini to know where all the ini's are, but ya, lots of fun things in renaming that people do on purpose for the sole purpose of not allowing others to alter the data or to try fooling them on the location of them. Can't really comment on tng's security since never really bothered looking in on them, but just stuff that I did myself as a modder, this was stuff which was done a long long time ago. Anyways Always 1st check the freelancer.ini to see where things are and named
