Wing Commander FL v2.4

Wing Commander FL v2.4:

While working on the Privateer: The Reckoning mod, it was recommended that I release a new ship pack.
As Privateer has several ship packs available, and since there are numerous Wing Commander ships in these mods, I released it as Wing Commander FL.
While fooling around with it, and The Reckoning, I came to realize that many of the bugs in Reckoning were ship-related.
Therefore, I've stopped work on Reckoning to concentrate on eliminating the ship-related bugs, first.

I've determined that the primary bugs were hardpoints.
Some were named wrong, and some were just plain missing.
The secondary bugs were due to the "fuses," which determine how a ship blows up.
I've run through all of the missions, and found several minor bugs, which have all been fixed, and one major bug, that caused me to pull the Vesuvius from the mod.

Here's the v2.4's current ReadMe file:
-1) This is Basically a glorified Ship Pack.
-2) All of the Player's ships have been replaced.
-3) All of the gunboats have been replaced.
-4) All of the battleships have been replaced.
-5) All but Liberty's cruiser/destroyers have been replaced.
-6) Freelancer Weapons and equipment have been replaced.
--a) Only the Nomads have their original weapons.
--b) Nomad and Special weapons not available to player.
--c) Most things are available everywhere.
---1) Prices vary by factions.
---2) Availability varies by factions.
-7) Ship prices are on par with Privateer's prices.
--a) The only Wing Commander game with ship prices.
--b) New ships only come with engines & tractor beams.
---1) This actually lowers the cost of a new ship.
--c) You MUST transfer Shields, Sensors, Generators, etcetera!
---1) Or you have to purchase new ones to fly!
-8) The Bearcat uses the Anubis ship icon.
--a) Some ship icons are erratic, and appear blank at times.
--b) On some computer systems, the top of the Bearcat is white.
-9) All ships are for sale to the player at all times.
--a) The gunboats are not available to the player.
--b) The carrier is not available to the player.
--c) The Paradigm is not available to the player.
10) This "ship pack" is incompatible with other ship packs.
11) Ship wrecks have been changed, too.
12) To add to the "WC Feeling," Rheinland (the bad guys) fly Kilrathi ships.
13) To add to the "WC Feeling," reworked the Freeport 7 cinematic.
14) Nomad ships haven't been changed.
15) Reworked some DLL's to use Wing Commander ship names.
16) As in my Equalizer mod's, NPC's use normal shields.
17) Reworked the Beam_Effects, and Fuses.
18) Missiles on most ships fire like torpedoes in FL do.
--a) Use "Shift" + "Q" to fire them.
--b) If you have Torpedoes AND Missiles, they'll fire together.
--c) Banshee, Epee, Hornet, Orion and Vindicator have normal missile slots.
19) The Leech missile IS a Cruise Disruptor, and fires like one.
20) My Spinning Planets Mod was added.
21) Added my Hovis Race Bypass mod.
--a) When asked to race, decline, and leave.
--b) Your waypoint to Quintane will be waiting outside.
--c) If you WANT to race, simply accept the challenge.
22) Reworked the cockpits for better views.
23) Reworked the Infocards on the WC II ships.
24) Shrunk the weapons to Wing Commander proportions.

Also, if anyone can texture ships, I have several Privateer 2 ships that just need texturing to be ready.
They include the Drakkar, Freij Mk II, Danrik, Heretic, Icarus, and the Monolith freighter.

--b) On some computer systems, the top of the Bearcat is white.

This is a result of a video card not being able to handle the textures, so FL displays it as white. The Rheinland Bomber did the same for me, and I upgraded to a Radeon 9600 from a Voodoo3, and that solved the problem.

Thanx for the info.
My computer is one of those with that problem.
(I'm only using the on-board graphics that came with the computer.)

You're welcome. I try to make sure I help when I can, because I've needed so much myself.

So have you updated the mod and just not posted it yet? Or is the download still the v1.2.1 beta 10?

LarryLaffer:
The mod is now in v2.3 and the beta testers are going through it.
Hopefully, it'll be released by this weekend.
(If they don't find any more bugs.)

Warzog,

Your mod sounds awesome. Back when I was in High School, the very first Wing Commander game was released and I remember watching my friend play it for the first time on his old 286! A week later I bought a then top of the line 486 DX2 33mhz and the first game I played on that dinosaur of a PC was WC!

I bought FL years ago when it first came out, beat it a few times (in a row) before I put it away and as the story goes, "Forgot" about it. Well I "Found" it little over a week ago in the closet of my office. Went looking for mods and found this site.

Then I saw your post about your upcomming WC mod and it brought back so many memories. To date I have played every PC version of WD ever released. Even watched the movie. (Which was not very good sadly)

Do you have any screen shots of any ships you could bless us with?

Thanks!

tgsmrg:
Screenshots I got...
A place to put 'em...
I don't!
But hopefully, it'll be out soon, and you can get your own screenshots.

Status:
Currently down to a few last-minute bugs, a few tweaks, and a couple of "nice-to-haves."
AFAIK, all of the bugs have finally been taken care of.
Last-minute-items include a few new load-outs, and fixing the cockpits to match the ships.
(A feature I keep forgetting even exists in Freelancer!)

Version 2.4 just went Beta.
It adds:
Smaller weapons, resized to about 1/3rd Freelancer size, look great on the ships!
New Cockpit views on all ships, a bit better than before.
Reduced the amount of shield damage done by missiles.
Repaired missing hardpoints on the Stiletto and Ferret.
Reworked the WC II ship's infocards. (Had complaints from WC II fans.)
Reworked some ship prices.
Reworked Orion loadouts.
Reworked Ferret and Epee stats.

Version 2.4 going Beta means what exactly?

Do you have an ETA for the Mod being finished & playable?

Getting a little excited here...

It means that enough changes were made to release a new version to the Beta Testers.
A few new issues have cropped up, especially in the latter missions that must be resolved before it's released.

As to a release "date," I'd hoped to already released it.
Right now, I'd say it'll be at least another couple of days.
(sorry )

Well bummer. I had hoped to have been able to play it this weekend.

However, I respect the fact that you want to make sure it's ready before being released. Nothing kills a mod or even game for that amtter, faster than it being released before it's ready. There are already too many mods out for FL that say one thing, but then do another. This weekend alone (While WAITING for your mod.. lol ) I downloaded 3 mods that said they were SP & OSP compatable, only to get a good ways into the Mod to find out that the Mod was unfinished to the point that it was unplayable.

I really hate wasteing my time playing a buggy or broken mod..

Thanks for taking the time to make sure it's ready first.

The worst example I've had of that (thankfully) was the last version of FLRebalance. I played all the way through the missions, finishing with a Titan, and couldn't take off from Manhattan again. I'd crash the game about half-way through the loading screen. Major bummer. Still a fun mod.

Did you manage to fix the bad texture on the Bearcat?

Triaxx2:
As I'm one of the few who doesn't have a graphics card...
And I'm not a modeller, or a texturer...
The Bearcat's texture remains unchanged.
I've been told that it looks great, just wish I could see it too.
Sorry.

Update:
Down to balance issues...
Reworked the shields, nanobots, shield batts, and salvage, in order to increase survivability.
We're trying to keep the game survivable, but still keep the element of risk in.
It's a really tough balancing act, but I think that the end result will be worth it.
I had tried to remain faithful to Wing Commander loadouts, but they were far to harsh for Freelancer.
As has been mentioned, we're trying to have as good a mod as we can get, before it's released.
