New version of DOSbox can play Privateer better on XP

Here you can find news, get help and comment about the Privateer / Wing Commander Total Conversion called ?Privateer: The Reckoning? and accompanying Mods

You're right, it was 320 x 200. I bet there would be no way to have it take up a full screen on a modern computer. I can't even set my video card settings for anything lower than 800 x 600.

hey Spectre,

You should call this thread "New version of DOSbox can play Privateer Chunkier on XP" LOL

Post Sun Mar 28, 2004 1:16 pm

If you use the "QFixApp" you can set Priv to run in 320x200. If you haven't heard of it, QFix is an MS tool that is sort of like an advanced form of "Compatibility Mode", and has many more options. I've tried it with DOS games, but it still doesn't work for me though .

SS - I was around back then, but I never posted. Still, I like humour. That is why I too, almost always use emoticons. You know, without the emoticons in your posts, you sound really depressed. I'm sorry for plunging you into the pit of boredom and dispair!!! *Starts flagellating self* .

Sir Spectre:
Actually, it's not the modern computers, it's XP.
I've got several older games that run in 640x480 and 320x240, even under XP.

Does VMWare work well under XP?

BTW, OT myself, @Warzog this forum is about to overtake Starfyre Studios in popularity! But then they have their own website and their own forums, but irregardless you'll be the 2nd most popular modding project on TLR!!

Sir Spectre:
While that is true, it has little to do with me.
It has more to do with the popularity of the Wing Commander & Privateer games, than anything that I've done.

No, this mod is so popular because I've been giving it my full endorsement .

@Esq, keep telling that to yourself, you may one day believe it. Outside of Off-Topic ... you're nothing!

going to have to try this out is I can't get it to run in win98 dos mode. will also have to see if dosbox will help with my Pirates! Gold issues

Privateer runs fine in dos mode on this machine -- WIn98se, p3-933/256 ram, geforce2 mx, sb16 pci. I don't think I've tried running it in a dos box, but why should I when I can boot to dos, heh. Still remember my old p-133, had an original creative sb-16 isa card, so nice to go through installs with no sound problems Nowadays I have to say "sb or compatible" to dos games

@Esq, no comment.

@Trucidation, I had a feeling it would work on Win98, just never had the opportunity to try. I have a 133mhz PC I still use for Privateer almost the exact same specs as yours.

Yerp VmWare works fine on xp. the Only issues i have with it are when i install a NIC (virtual) to the VM and it goes thru and sets up bridged networking . Asides from that its works like a charm, well the latest version does anyway. The older versions had trouble with EMM hooks and privateer crashed like a little *^&%*. But i too still have an old p2 333 that runs it nicely .

I run Privateer and RF in DOS mode on a P100 running Win98 that I keep around specifically for old games. (I've copied both .tre files over to the HD, so I don't even need the CD.) I like what I've seen of DOSbox, but would need to tinker with it a bit more before I could attempt a "fast" game like Privateer or X-wing.

A third option, which I didn't have much luck with myself, is MyJEMM - a version of the Privateer memory manager rewritten specifically to play on XP. The WC CIC news item (with screenshot) is here.

Finally, for those who have need of Windows icons for these games, I offer my own efforts (in both 32x32 and 64x64 scale), bundled as a zipfile and as an ICL; the actual icons are cleaner than this jpg preview.
