New version of DOSbox can play Privateer better on XP

Since some of you were asking how to make Privateer work with older version of DOSbox, here is a newer version. The below text is quoted from WCNews.com

New DOSBox Version Helps Play Old WC Games
King Graham over at Crius has tested the new version 0.61 DOSBox application for running old DOS games in Windows and other operating systems. Apparently there are some good bug fixes that help out a lot. The tech support fans at Crius have all sorts of tips to get everything from WC1 to Armada running on some level. This is critical as it becomes a way to run Privateer/RF/Armada in Windows XP! Sometimes sound can be difficult to get running, but other times you get added features such as the ability to use newer USB joysticks with the old games. A few WC games are even officially "supported" by the program.

Wing Commander 1 (1990) supported
Wing Commander 2 (1991) supported
Wing Commander 3 (1994) runable
Wing Commander Academy (1994) supported
Wing Commander Armada (1994) supported
Wing Commander IV (1995) broken
Wing Commander Privateer (1994) supported

I hope this makes some of you Privateer players happy!

Thanx for posting it in here.
I was hoping that Chemus would, but....

I've had DosBox 0.61 since the 21/2, and it runs Priv very slowly. Hopefully, this really is a new version; you know a 0.6.1.1 sort of thing.

Well, Esquilax, depending on your machine, you can increase the emulated cycles per second and improve speed...to a certain extent. It still requires trial and error method however...and it's not perfect afaik

Warzog, I just didn't think to actually make a post here...I'm glad that you did Sir Spectre

I know that Chemus, but the .conf file does not state the maximum number of cycles for my P4. Maybe I'll have to risk it. I'll get around to it eventually .

@Chemus, with that bold type, are you accusing me of something?

@Esquire, you say you already knew of .61 as it was, maybe the news was new to WCNews and not really new at all, where I then misunderstood it to be new news because of others who knew not that it was old news whereby nothing new was learned by those who knew the truth of what would be in fact new news as opposed to what wasn't new news in the slightest.

How many times can you use "new" by itself or as part of a word in one sentence?

Has anybody tried this? Does it work well?

SS - I was wondering how long it would take for someone to call me "Esquire". I had a feeling that it would be you! Well, I could bandy words with you all day, but I can state that I have had 0.61 since Feb, and that WCNews must be a little behind the times. Obviously, they knew not that the DosBox news was old news, and that by posting it as new news, they would be providing old news that would be news to no-one who knew about the old news .

Bri - It seems to work well for some people. It's a small download, give it a try.

@Esq, I'm the first one to call you a lot of things!

Yes, I've noticed that SS . I zinged you in the "Pretty Colours" thread though. You DO have an emoticon fetish!

I saw it, but I just attributed that to you being new. You didn't see me for most of the time I've been here. I mostly had very serious and normal discussions. But the plays led me to Off-topic, then I bored myself with trying to hold lots of semi-serious conversations there. Now I only make posts that are fun! So that is why all my posts have emoticons, not because I normally use them, but because I now only ever make the types of posts where I would use them.

I didn't use one in this post and this post is a good example of how I use to always converse in these forums. Well, reasoned, thought out and no zingers. I can already feel myself getting bored.

Since this is a completely different thought and back on topic of this thread, I decided to post a second time.

I don't need DOSBox, instead I use my old Pentium 133 for great Privateer playing. It is especially a great thing to use as it loads directly into the game without the need to start Windows or enter any DOS commands. It acts much like a Playstation in that respect.

Anyway, assuming that DOSbox will be made more effective to use with Privateer in the future what are the pros and cons of playing Privateer on a new computer?

For instance, on WCNews' belated announcement they had a link to a pic of the game on someone's XP system, it looked as though the game only took up 80% of the screen. I know the dimensions of the game are 640 x 480 or something, but is it possible to have screen switch sizes from normal 1024 x 768 to the needed size so as to take a up a full screen? Hopefully to be done with out requiring me to switch the Video Card settings every time.

Other pros/cons I should be aware of? New joysticks on an old game?
