Epsilon Version 2.7 - comments and feedback

Here you can find news, get help and comment about the ?Epsilon Mod? for Freelancer

Post Mon Dec 06, 2004 1:18 pm

Some miscellaneous comments after running through 2.71. This is apparently not the most recent version, and I'm not sure about the exact release "letter" since it isn't shown in script.xml, but the download was epsilon271.zip.flmod and script.xml is dated 2004-09-04.

In general, this is an excellent mod in my opinion. I haven't felt this terrified leaving the Manhattan docking ring since my first time playing Freelancer.

Possible bug/tweak items below.

+ Error loading epsilon1.dll
I always get errors in my flspew for epsilon1.dll:
Couldn't load epsilon1.dll! Error code 998
In case it might be a file corruption error, the file is dated 2004-08-32, size is 98,304 bytes, and the CRC32 checksum I get for it is 443437e4.

+ Gameplay on slower-than-recommended systems
It actually works OK on my P3-600 (384MiB RAM, 32MiB nVidia video card). Some miscellaneous crashes on new systems where I'm seeing odd things with rumors and names, so it may be related to the epsilon1.dll error above.

+ Taipan
The Taipan rides a little high in dogfights, enough so that the upper wing plane tends to obscure targets ahead. In my version, the f_taipan model's camera_offset data in shiparch.ini is
camera_offset = 9, 38
After some experimenting, it looks like changing this to 18, 38 is definitely too much, but values in the range of 12-15 generally seem to work well - a decent view of the ship under cruise but the targets don't get obscured by the wing.

Hi WCW, thanks for the comments

The epsilon1.dll errors have been taken care of, we had many complaints about it and finally solved the problem.

Crashes in new systems were partially related to epsilon1.dll errors although there are likely still some errors buggering about out there that need to be fixed, although the mod is much more stable now.

The Taipan, along with many models are having camera angles adjusted as there are quite a few ships that look bizarre (not to say our ships arent ) with the odd camera angles.

Thanks again WCW and if you find any more bugs we're always happy to hear about them.

The first time I played the mod I did have an interesting problem that might make for a nice variation.

I just skimmed the readme, enough to notice that it was supposed to be "hard" but not enough to realize I should start out with some cash - and as a consequence of other minor tweaking I had done, I started out in Manhattan with no cash and 2 Justice I's.

It takes a lot of running and gunning to get that 3rd gun - you running, the Rogues gunning. B-)

Not for everyone, but it added an awesomely hard "pre-level" phase to gameplay. It could be fun for überhard gameplay. It feels like a victory when you make it back to Newark with a hold full of scrap metal.

Harrier, we met on TLR's TeamSpeak server with BakedPotato.

Well I have been trying to get my second 'puter up. Seems after installing WinXPPro, upon the first reboot there is no OS on the hard drive! Maybe a bad media in the boot area of the hard drive. I'll keep plugging at it. I was at first thinking I had to split my dual ADSL lines but I am going to try different LAN segments and such. Anything to keep the bandwidth together, use one gateway (it handles dual Internet connections) and maximise bandwidth especially for my Boston server.

Eventually I'll get it though because I want to host an Epsilon mod server! Yes, you heard right! Don't know how long I could do it but you and bp convinced me it may be fun to play a modded server (I have never played an FL modded server except my own and Lello's Revenge on Lansdale). Since I see no Eplison server's out there and I figure you'd want some more testing, I'll do it if you wish. I beta tested our own mod, beta tested IFSO and FLAC as well as AkaTaka's FLAccountBrowser and the accompanying FLServerConnection program. I can help test your mod.

Once things are set on my end I will ask for the server-side files. Anything needed server-side besides a clean FL install, FL SDK v1.3 install and the latest FLMM? Do I need the FL patch v1.1 server-side? (I know I don't need it client-side) I see the IFSO files for the mod are also on TLR so I'll get those. Just getting the ball rolling...

OK, I must of had a bad boot area on that hard drive. Replaced it and installed everything. I now see the server on the FL global server list (it's called Boston Freelancer (Epsilon mod) ). Unfortunately I see it on my LAN and no one has logged into it yet so I don't know if it is working from the Internet side.

Can anyone test it out? Let me know? Especially anyone on the mod design team? I would think they'd be the most familiar with it.

EDIT: Spelling errors! *sigh*

Earendil,

Well I fired up 2.71 and went for a visit.. the Ping is fairly high for me but playing the mod is not too bad.

We spoke on teamspeak while i was there and as as far as I can tell you seem to be enjoying it.. there were about 5 players there total when I was playing and lag really was not a great issue...

When I get a chance I will go back and play some more..

Harrier.

its been a while since i've posted here, but what the hey.

The music for epsilon has been on a bit of hiatus, due to me starting (and finishing) work, schoolies, and my own musical projects have interrupted the process. hopefully, i can get back on track and complete music for the core house systems... so thats 4 tracks... easy.

I am writing just to thank you and the many others in the team who created the Epsilon MOD for Freelancer. When I first read the reviews of the original game, and having been a big Elite fan years ago, looked forward to playing the Freelancer programme. Having plaid it to its conclusion (story wise), and for several days after, reaching 14 million credits and over 2600 kills, I started to search the web for any MODs that would extend the game and enhance the experience of Freelancer.

I then discovered the Lancersreactor website and several MODs. The predicable and very enjoyable Star Wars MOD, a must for all space fans. And then your Epsilon MOD. I liked the look of a lot of your ships and couldn’t wait to download the MOD and try hen out. You said players new to the MOD would die several times in Liberty alone, and I did just that. Those Rogues are something else ! I did however come up with a few new tactics that outsmarted them and allowed me to get to Planet Huston. There I bought the Warlord fighter (after a while of collecting mission bounties, and running Cademine to Planet Manhattan), and have not looked back since.

Thank you very much indeed for your MOD. I was tinkering with adjustments to my own MOD, with pilots being ejected from blown fighters and transporting them back for a bounty. (You thought of that one too). And transferring prisoners from one planet’s jail to another’s. I also had the idea of transporting three kinds of people. Travellers split into the very wealthy (high cost), who could be sold to pirate bases for a ransom; the middle class passengers (medium cost), looking to pay passage from one planet top another; and refugees (low cost), who are just keen to get out from one place to another.

It doesn’t seem right that the only people flying from place to place in the systems are traders and fighter pilots. There should be passenger liners too, which could be attacked and life pods transported to the fighter’s hold, and then you get paid for delivering them to a safe planet or station. (They don’t have to know that you were the one who destroyed their passenger liner in the first place….

Please pass on my thanks to all concerned, and though I didn’t know him, I think you have honoured the memory of your friend Worth Whitcomb with the Warlord fighter. I think of him as I’m flying the great craft through the space lanes, and I never met the chap.

Hope you keep up the good work. Its right on the nail.

Best wishes,

Longstorm

Hey, i find me dying more often kinda refreshing (although really annoying if your traveling long distance between stations and they get a few lucky shots in)

one question however, are you guys planning to fix the 'bug' where missions are not as easy and the mission states? (i picked up a level 2 difficulty against the outcasts and got completetly owned, however i can do level 8 against the mollys and rogues.....sort of annoying as i have to reload and cancel the mission (witch buggers up my rep.)

beutifull models and the weapons are nice, btw is there any sector i could go to that is 'safe' (ie: i can take a breather and enjoy the scenery, test how ships handle and just goof off?)
