Apparently, what happens is, if you kill Ivan after Steiner's escape pod has been destroyed, then the game doesn't know what to do (because he's supposed to be warping out) and crashes.


nope, you can kill petrov and still not rescue steiner, those two events are seperated.

I've saved Steiner and Killed Petrov and Kulov (using SLEdit to improve the shroud though)
