This is a disgrace.

I am sorry that my first post here is a rant, but I really have to vent.

So, I finally got to the last mission of the game. I had encountered a few crashing bugs along the way, with the game crashing to Windows for no apparent reason, but I shrugged it off and moved on, because the game was just that much fun.

After an hour or so of attempting the last mission, I finally complete the final object - only for the game to crash, giving me some error about a module trying to load. Now, I'm sorry, but if you design a game that crashes randomly during missions, including the VERY END of the LAST MISSION, then the least you can do is release a PATCH. Sure, Digital Anvil has better things to do, but the game has been out 3 years - 3 YEARS, and no patch. I ALONE, if I knew the code, could've patched the game in that amount of time.

A game that has been out for 3 years without a patch would USUALLY be a good sign, but apparently in this case it's just a sign of laziness. I love computer games, more than I ever will love console games, but this is the sort of thing that makes me never want to play computer games again.

I just hope Freelancer fares better in the bugs department.

First, welcome to the forums!

Second, do you have specific info on those chrashes? Like messages you got or somethinf, maybe you system specs. I'm playing this game for 3 years now and I never got an error. Maybe your copy is just wrong (or however you say that).

Please provide more info so we can help you.

Try disabling 3D Sound - this is the only known issue that makes the game crash...

Well, I'm playing the game with a Logitech WingMan Rumblepad on a brand new Toshiba Satellite running a Pentium 4 with 2.40 GHZ and 512 Meg RAM. Video card is a Mobility Radeon with 32 megs video memory. OS is Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1.

The crash said something about the failure to load a certain module, which makes me wary of even trying the mission another time, for fear it will just crash again and I'll throw my laptop out of my apartment window.

I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

I've never had 3D sound enabled, so I know that's not the problem.

Sigh. Thanks for the idea, though.

I must say i think it is an XP problem. i had the same fault on my XP machine after it ran fine on 98 Me and 2000 Prof

Try Compatability wizzard set it to run as if in 98. That may cure your problem

I'd double check the 3d sound setting...it may be on by default. 99% of the crashes in SL are due to this setting, otherwise it could be the operating system.

I also had problems with SL in win xp, crashing randomly in the game, but after i installed all the new patches for win xp I never had a problem again. So check if you have all the patches installed...

btw this is my first post, hi everybody!

Hey all,

Just wanted to let you all know I finally got back to playing StarLancer. I beat the game this time, but not before encountering the crash one final time.

*SPOILER FOLLOWS*

Apparently, what happens is, if you kill Ivan after Steiner's escape pod has been destroyed, then the game doesn't know what to do (because he's supposed to be warping out) and crashes.

Just wanted to let all of you know, in case you run into the same problem. Thanks for all your advice

Try not to be so bad with people who made such a great game. I have no problems with my "StarLancer". It's running smooth. The graphics isn't the greatest but, in my opinion, "StarLancer" is the best space combat simulator. Why don't they release a second version? Or un update...

Post Thu Feb 06, 2003 8:18 pm

Yes, I was admittedly too harsh on them. I was just annoyed that NO PATCH was ever released. Almost any game these days has at least a small patch for a few minor things.

But I agree, they did make a pretty amazing game, and I was just upset at having gotten so far only to be stopped by such a trivial little bug.
