**Tutorial** Secret to engine colors

Changing engine colors and effects is easy. You can do it by changing as few as 2-3 lines of text depending on if you are using a mod to show engine trails on your own ship.

Open up engine_equip.ini

Find whatever engine part/your ships engine you want to modify.

You can change the flame color or "FLAME EFFECT" by
finding the line "flame_effect=" (Note most engine effects have "_fire" after the
effect reference if the effect doesn't it should work but some of the large
transport and capship engines don't.)
In the equals you can copy and insert the effect from any other engine.

(Note cruise engine color/trailcolor gives a different affect then the "FLAME EFFECT" You can mix two different effects to make a multicolor engine and cruise of your own preference.)

To change the cruise engine color/trailcolor

find the line "trail_effect=" and insert the trail affect of your choice (note this effects your Cruise Engine affect even though it says trail effect also all effects of this type must end with "_trail"

To change the engine trail itself find the line "trail_effect_player="
and insert the effect you want must end with "_trail" not "_flame" or nothing.
(Note also the "trail_effect_player=" must match the "trail_effect=" above it.)

an example of edited engine effects for my liberty cruiser

WOW
This is great. I'm sure it helped a lot of people. I like the Sith Infiltrator, but I like the Starfighter (Anubus/titan) flame color. It looks easy, like you said, BUT . . .
I do have a question though. You say to "open up engine_equip.ini." But this file is in some kind of code. I assume you mean for us to use the BINI program.
OK, I downloaded it, and visited the post where people spoke of how to use it, but people had different ways to use it, and not all were 100% satisified with the results.
Could you please tell us the novice usable, step by step proceedure you are referring to when you say to open up the file? It would be much appreciated.

Thanks

to edit your engine ini files go into your bini program. Go the the following directory Freelancer/data/equipment open up the file engine_equip.ini from here you should be able to make modifications. If is won't open temporarily move engine_equip.ini to the data folder open it from here make your modifications than move it back. I dont know why that works but sometimes you have to do that the first time you open up a ini file.

Tell me if you have any other problems

Look for the engine the Anubis uses (ge_oe_engine_01) and copy the flame_effect and trail_effect lines into the engine the Titan uses (ge_coe2_engine_01), then duplicate the trail_effect line as trail_effect_player.

Nice tut, but how about a list of all the flame effects and a screenshot? I'm trying to figure out which one is the one for the Bloodhounds.

I have fun with the effect br_tachyon_04_proj, using it as a flame effect.

Post Thu Jan 06, 2005 10:45 am

what if you don't want an engine effect? I have a few ships that don't have "standard" engines (i.e. gravity wave generators, etc.) would I be able to get away with not having a flame_effect?

Remove the lines

flame_effect=gf_br_largeengine02
trail_effect=gf_br_atransport_engine01_trail
trail_effect_player=gf_br_atransport_engine01_trail

Do you mean no engine effect at all or an engine effect outside of the standard effects? Effects outside the "norm" are easily possible. See mine here.

question:
is it possibl;e to ALTER the color of those flames?
my favorite exhaust is the rheinland chemical exhaust(i call it chemical...) but my favorite color is(like many others here) the anubs reddish color...

coud i alter the rheinland exhaust fumes to show as red, rather then green?

Yes and No. Yes it can be done, no you can't do it yet.
