Wing Commander Privateer X Mod

Hello, I'm Bob McDob. You may already know me as the "Account ID" guy, or from wcnews, or "the guy who keeps dying in a Rhino" on the Drakhai server. Anyway, my plan is to make a WIng Commander Privateer Mod for FL.

I realize this is something like the 300th time this has been brought up, but I assure you, I have connections. Enough to virtually guarentee most of the ship model supplies and rough statistics. The problem, then, is to modify them for FL.

There is already preliminary work on models, thanks to the Wing Commander Universe mod for the open-source Vega Strike engine (http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/galle ... strike_mod). Most of the fighters have been completed, however problems have been encountered regarded capital ships. I understand work is progressing on capital ships in FL, but not enough for them to be totally reliable. Nevertheless, we will proceed.

To summarize: If we can work out a project, and consolidate our efforts and procedures to maximize productivity, we shall be victorious, and maybe I can stop talking like Dilbert's boss.

Nobody's interested in free Wing Commander models?

(Well, I guess HCl would be interested, but hell, he's top brass, he can have anything <G>

I would love to work on the project, but I know a little less than nothing about FL Modding. :/

I was all excited about this game because it was just like Privateer. Heck, Trent even looks like 'you' in the first Privateer!

But, the bottom line after my ramblings is I can't help you. Sorry.

I just figured that since people are posting "LETS REMAKE PRIVATEER IN FREELANCER" every other second, and I had a ****loaf of models in store, and HCl is a well known WC modder, we might be able to work something out :/

I for oen would love to see this mod. I also have played with the freelancer ini's alot and done all sorts of things like adding hardpoints and making tradelanes, but I just don't have the time to get involved in this as a lead modder, I will help out on some of the more tricky stuff however.

Don't listen to these whipper snappers. I would be grateful if you were to develop a privateer mod or expansion as I miss prowling the lanes of the clark quadrant with my Centurion or running patrols in the oxford system chasing or better yet surviving ownership of a Tasus ( oh the memories, my mistake that was just a couple of days ago). All thing aside I would love to see a functional Privateer mod as the the graphics were nice but dated. For those who wonder what we're talking about you can download it from this site and play it folling the intructions on site if your using win95, 98, 98se, ME

I'm almost totally certain Privateer doesn't work in ME.

(the weird shiny effect is from the engine used to render it, not the model itself)

these modles look amazing when rendered properly i must say, and im a huge elite/frontier/privateer fan and would like to help on this project (freelancer -> privateer MOD), im also a windows programmer so i can help if and when external programs will be needed. contact me [email protected]

I'd love to see this project materialise too. I can help with some odd jobs, but university life leaves me no time for serious commitment.

Hmm ... well, if you people really want to do this, it begs the question - how much do you want to do?

Changing the ship stats is simple enough, and we're making good progress with cracking the model format. The problem here then is, do we want to replace ships or clone them? Do we do only the fighters, or the capships and transports as well, which will mean roughly 60% more work?

How many games do we want to cover? Privateer is simple, only four ships ... WCI-III is a lot harder ... then there's every WC game including Privateer II, which I am in no way touching.

What kind of stats should the ships have? (FL's balancing terrifies me. NEVER AGAIN)

Do we want to change the music? (Simple enough) ...

What about editing factions to make them resemble WC ones more? (Since Wing Commander only has two main factions, this should be relatively simple, as long as we're focusing on changing the names and maybe relations, nothing more)

Change/add commodoties? (Not sure how hard this is ...)

Change/add systems? (*NO*)

Change/add weapons? (I really don't see the point of it)

That's basically my take on it. For the moment there's not much we can do, except maybe tweak the music and fiddle around with editing to get a feel for it.

How about some Frontier Elite ships as well? An Imperial Courior, Imperial Trader, or Vyper Defence craft. I know they are old, but hey a little upgrade wouldnt go amiss?

Hey Guys,

Umm, unfortunately I'm only a begginer to programming as a whole, and at the moment know about f*** all about Freelancer (for now) but when I get up to scratch I will defintely volunteer for this worhy cause

Anyway, on the subject of adding ships from Frontier, I personally don't like that Idea - it's cross-mixing the genres a little too much, as ships from Elite would obviously be unbalanced to Wing Commander ships...

But, could I possibly make some suggestions?

1) Make it possible to attain an Excalibur (whether u pay out a fortune or go thru a mission and "acquire it" doesn't bother me, but the Excalibur is a lovely ship, I reckon she'd give the WC4 Dragon a pretty good fight )

2) Make it possible to get Kilrathi ships (I've always wanted to fly the Dralthi...)

3) Use of the video clip thingies from WC3 (the communications ones - like "Kilrah avenge me!" -- I don't know if this is possible or not but I believe that Wing Commander CIC has a tool for extracting the video files... just might make it interesting if it's possible - and they should be thr right size too...

4) No Prophecy stuff, Sorry if I offend anyone here, but WC Prophecy SUCKED... MAJORLY...

Anyway, whether u accept these suggestions or not are totally up to you, just putting my ideas forward

Have fun guys, and I hope this awesome mod comes to surface

P.S: Don't waste any time fixing the joystick in the game, I'd rather see the game than joystick support (besides, I actually prefer the mouse myself)
