More Hosting questions.

Hey guys:

I'm now hosting a new server and have some questions about my setup.

I have three comps running off MS Internet connection sharing. My server is running off comp with the main connection. and I play off my gaming machine. When i see my server in the Global server list .... It shows the windows internal ip addy. Is there anyway to change it so it shows the true ip or does it make a difference ...

I believe these server questions are answered right in the readme file located on the Freelancer CD. You might want to look there first.

@L-i-z-a-r-d

I do not believe it makes a difference, FL is going to take the shortest, fastest route to the server it can find and with yours thats is via the internal LAN. For everybody else it is going to be via your internet connection.

cool ... thanks for the feedback guys ...

And to connect to the server through your network instead of through the Internet is the best for your bandwidth. You leave your (usually) restricted Internet access bandwidth for one more player to use.

Now if you are P2Ping and using TeamSpeak and Internet radio streaming with the server all on one Internet connection, THEN you may have other bandwidth problems. (been there, done that, have a photo, never going back)

How do I set up a lan server. I have a linksys router. When I start the FL servier (I name it), the server name doesn't come up in multiplayer.

Post Wed Jan 26, 2005 4:16 pm

Earendil: yeah ... I'm Slowly learning about bandwidth. The server is the only app running on that comp ... it is also acting as my router ... It's cheap and effective. I play from my new machine p4 2.8 blah blah blah I havn't really had any lag yet ... but i've also not had that many people yet ...

To anyone who wants to check it out ... The server name is " [email protected] "
it currently has a 16 player max . keep in mind this is more or less experimental ... If this goes well i may put some of my limited funds into upgrading ect. If it doesn't go well it will become a Ghost Recon Server

tlapier: I'm not much help there dude ... Everything just kinda went smoothly for me.

Thanks for trying folks. Don't fret about not being able to help. I had technical support from both linksys and microsoft on the line for about 5 hours. An NO one can give me a step by step process that works. I can neither use the Lan connection (it doesn't see my FL server), or the use the internet global server (it appears, but won't connect).

Perhaps if folks game me their router settings it might help. I'm with comcast and they assign a random IP address.

Thanks

Hello there, I have a FL server now for a little while. Have seen on other servers that the admin changed the automatic console message into something else when someone tries to cheat. It might be a dumb question but in which file can I change this message?
please help :-)

@tlapier - There really is a lot on the forums on setting up an flserver including all the network stuff. Both of my ADSL are dynamic IP addresses for example and I minimize the impact by doing two things: first I use a gateway that never times out the Internet connection (in my case a dual WAN gateway both connections), second I am up-to-date in posting the IP addresses on my website's home page for all to see.

As for the gateway (what you call a router is really a gateway because it does much more than just route!) there is only TWO things you really need to do, ready?

First set your server (the one with flserver running) to a fixed LAN address. This is an IP address that is in the private range (that means it is no where on the WAN or Internet) like 192.168.xxx.xxx where the xxx is a number from 0 to 255. Your gateway for example should end in a 1 like 192.168.0.1.
- Anyhow set your server to a fixed IP address in your gateway by picking one (we'll say 192.168.0.59 just because).
- Next you must check out the network status window or just type what's within the quotes "ipconfig /all" in a DOS window and you'll see the physical or MAC address. This address is unique to every peice of equipment that can ever connect to a network.
- Somewhere within your gateway (sometimes called host or fixed IPs) you enter in the MAC address and the 192.168.0.59 IP address you want of the server. Thus every time your server starts and goes to the DHCP server in the gateway to get a LAN IP address it will get the same one, 192.168.0.59.

Second you must open a tunnel (sometimes called a virtual server) for flserver. Basically this is where anything that comes to your gateway from the Internet if it has the specific port(s) out of 65,536 possible ports, it will be "tunneled" through the gateway's firewall and sent specifically to the fixed LAN IP address, your server.
- Find this screen in your gateway. Enter the server's LAN IP address and the range of flserver's INCOMING ports which are 2302-2304 by the Readme.rtf that comes with FL install. Realize that flserver only needs one INCOMING port and you are opening three so if you make flserver use one INCOMING port with the /P command (I use /p2304) then you need only open one INCOMING port, not three.

I think this is what you are looking for tlapier. Good luck!

@WimStar - Plain vanilla (and some mod) installs of flserver which have the v1.1 patch have a CheatMessage.txt file in the FL EXE directory. It contains the phrase you see when flserver itself bans someone. Change this at your own risk!

IFSO has no ability to change it's cheat ban messages. FLAC does but only those related to admin player kicks and bans.

tlapier asks...
"How do I set up a lan server. I have a linksys router. When I start the FL servier (I name it), the server name doesn't come up in multiplayer".

If you are running flserver.exe on just one computer you don't go through the router...
You may notice that your ping will drop all the way down to 0 when you're connecting to your own computer...

But make sure you click on LAN and not Internet when you go to connect to your server...

If you have a LAN setup...I take it you ran the network wizard that is built into windows...or at least XP has the network wizard anyway...

If you can see the other computers on your LAN...you and the wizard have set it up correctly...then you wont have a problem connecting to the computer that is going to be the server...but again...make sure you click on LAN and not Internet when you go to connect...

Thanks to Earendil and to BackedPotatoe for pitching in. It turns out that Earendil's solution of creating a static ip address allowed me to set up a Lan server game on my home network. For this I am very thankful. Why didn't Microsoft come up with that solution after my 2 hour marathon TA call?

The trick was to set up my network settings as follows:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Leave the "use the following DNS server addresses" unchecked.

On my second computer I did the same thing put set my IP address as:
IP Address: 192.168.0.2

Although the above setting allowed me to set up a Lan game, I still can't set up a Global Server Game that can be accessed over the Internet. I have a linksys router with Comcast as my cable provider. They assign a random IP.

Any thoughts on this.

In have forwarded ports 2300-2400 and 2302-2304 in my router admin panel.
