Recommend me a multiplayer mod

Hi,

We are just about to start up a new multiplayer server and we are looking for a well rounded, nicely balanced mod to run on it.

We don't want hundreds of ships, or incredibly cheap ships, what we are looking for is a mod which increases the longevity of the game by providing something to aim for, eg capital ships, which cost a sensible amount of money and are only realistically attainable by teamwork.

Hence the questions below:

1) So what mods out there increase number of ships, whilst maintaining a good balance, and a sensible economy?

2)Finally, can anyone point me in the direction of recommended server specs? Preferably tried and tested as opposed to the developer specs, which often seem a bit far off the mark.

I have access to a 2800xp with 1gb 400drr on a 512 BB connection,
or
a P4 2Ghz with 256mb on a 100mb line.

Which matters more? quadrupling the ram or 20 times the connection speed?

Thanks
Chris

Well, a good mod is at bobway.com. Bobway's 4.4 enchancement mod. What it does is it adds all original ships to the game(I mean transports, capital, lifters etc.) It also starts the player out as neutral, so "Choose your own path" is now an option. It has new skins and new ship locations. Also, download the speaking thing on the site and create a server on it so people can talk instead of type.

You know which server rocks?
The 5thW something server. n00bs should try it out.
If you ever cross my trade path, don't be afraid to ask for a few bucks.

The mod at Bobway is a new version of Victors, 1.62 updated to 4.4, both are fun!

The downfalls of that mod (every mod has bad points) are all ships are capable of mounting up to 3 or more thrusters so PvP is about dead. If it happens it is more likely to be 2 capitol that are completely stationary seeing who can throw out the most firepower first or it is simply guerilla type attacks where someone comes screaming in at 850 or faster, unloads as many as 9 sunslayers on you and takes off. Also the battle ships will spin like they are on an axis if you are hit right and the kusari battle ship has a weak spot where 1 shot will kill it no matter how much hull is left.

Don't get me wrong I like the mod but it has lots of drawbacks too.

well, cruisers don't spin and also where is the kusari battleship weak spot?

I would add the RAM to the faster conn. Reason is simple: BOTH are needed to run with acceptable frame rate especially if MODed. Looking for SERVER SIDE only MODs can help here.

The Kusari battleship "sweet spot" is the rear wings. expecially it seems the underside, close to where they mount. A good hit or 2 there and the battleship starts exploding no matter how much hull is left.

The 100mb is my work PC unfortunately.

I'll stick with to running it at home. Thanks for the advice people.

I fond the best mod was the Evolutions 1.27 but unless u want to start ur server in a month when 1.28 is released there is no point in starting a 1.27 now!!

well, in my oppinion, big mods suck. I like simple mods like battleship encounters and the NPC Revenge mod and stuff like that. Also, I don't like mods that add new ships because during PvP, you can't blow off the opponent's parts.

You know what?
You guys should populate
Yukanojo's Server.
I love it. Start out completely neutral and 5k credits. Also, you can e-mail me and ask to join my clan if you want. I have 2 members already. If I agree with you joining, meet me at manhatten and i will give you 100k credits. So, pay a visit to Yukanojo's server. Also, during the next week(10th to 16th), I will be donating my 7-8mil credits, and equipment to someone on the
[5thW FL:: www.5thss.com
server to some lucky player hanging out manahtten. I wil be around manhatten and only for 5 mins. I have kusari rare guns all the way to nomad guns and level 10 fighter shield. Don't miss out.

In my experience (I've had a little ) flserver needs half a GB memory to run just fine. Since this doesn't include whatever else is running a GB total memory is fine overall (it's what I run).

Pipe is a big thing though and is contrary to most mods out there unless they are well balanced in terms of traffic. The immediate compensatation at the sysadmin level is to lower the maximum player limit but that is sometimes unpalatable as well.

In the end it will be a bit of a give and take. If your u/l speed at home is the same or less than your d/l speed then your u/l is the bandwidth limiter, not the CPU. If you can't get more memory for your work 'puter then regardless of your pipe, the server load will be more significant because of potentially lots of memory page swaps to and from your hard drive.

Hi I am the SO 4 3 lancer servers and am part of the oregon/usa team that currently r running 5 lancer servers
It has ben my exp that u will need the the best cpu that u can get and as mutch ram as u can get with the best connection u can get
esp if u plan 2 run a modded server other wise u will have nothing but probs
all the ore usa servers r dedicated on i gig dsl lines with the execption of the Epsilon 2.6.9 whitch is on a cable 256 up link
all the boxes have p4 2.4 or 2.6 cpus and 1 gig of 333 ddr ram allong with hyper threading MBs
I repeat if u want 2 run a killer server then dont go cheep spend a few bucks and u and your players will b mutch happyer in the long run
as far as mods go TnG is very stable but has a lot of stuff in it and its been arround a long time and has lost its luster
Rebalance is a killer mod but it is a cpu killer and crashes a lot
the black lable mods r simple and dont change mutch just a few ships u can add the BS/Manhattan mission mods allong with chips server op mod all r server side and will enhanse the game play
1 more thing battleships r bad 4 MP all the mods that have them have probs because of them that will leed 2 server crashes
anything that crabtree has his fingers in will usually b good
u can also use a shippack mod allong with the server side mods and create your own psudo mod server
The best thing is this site u can find all the info u want here about all the mods including neg feed back

Have A Great Day
