Experiment with global server

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Experiment with global server

I'm curious about something, and I need some help.

If there's anyone left out there that can still access the Freelancer Global Server, and still get a list of all active servers from it, Would you please go into your programfiles/microsoft games/freelancer/exe and send me a copy of your freelancer.ini to [email protected]. I'd appreciate it. If what I'm thinking is true, it could be the difference between people playing freelancer off the global server and not. if ANYONE can help me, please let me know asap

Whatcha mean? Like this part here?
[ListServer
;;;hostname = localhost ;Your local machine
;;;hostname = FLListServer2.dns.corp.microsoft.com ;GUN server in Austin
;;;hostname = 131.107.135.190 ;GUN server in Redmond
hostname = fllistserver.zone.msn.com ;GUN server in Redmond (DNS entry)

port = 2300

And that by changing these things you can change stuff? Not sure

Actually that is precicely what I'm refering to. See I think that the game is set up to filter out which servers different people have access to based on where they bought the game geographically. It makes sense that they would have priority servers for various parts of the world to reduce lag. only I think what has happened is one or more of those servers is no longer online, and if I can figure out how to get to the servers that are, then make the changes in the ini, then hey, the problems solved. if I'm wrong, then shrug, I'm wrong

Excellent point. Also - if for some reason MS ever got rid of its global server etc, it would be possible to actually have one running for everyone instead.........

I guess I don't believe there is filtering. I see servers from all over the world. Is there an instance where one player can see a server and another cannot at the exact same time?

I could believe this if different global servers are enabled throughout the world, which is what I think you are trying to find out. From what Chips posted under [Listserver, anyone see anything [udifferent[/u than what it shows? The semicolons are like comment commands so the only FL global server enabled is the MSN one.

As for listing on the FL global server I have seen some odd things. Such as copying over the Multiplayer directory to another server to test it for an upgrade. Now two DIFFERENT 'puters on the Internet with the SAME FL MP server ID are petitioning to the global server to be listed. If they regularly update at timed intervals, which I think they do, then the last update from a server will display it's IP address. I had this problem when players were trying to log into one server but often got the other.

Other global server problems I have seen are ports being selectively closed and I am not talking about just the INCOMING client port. Also lockups by flserver will maintain a listing on the global server but allow no logging on to the game server because flserver is locked.

ok, yea, you've hit on it. See my thought is that there are so many of us having problems gaining access to the freelancer servers, that I have to wonder if microsoft is even maintaining them or if they ever were. that being the case, maybe if someone can figure out how the global servers work, maybe there's a way to bypass them other than the ip address trick, and get a full listing of all the global servers. what would be cool is if there was a microsoft insider reading this and realising that their protected system isn't working, and they need to do something else

Well there IS a person that is on the forums (although I haven't seen him lately) that knows the FL global server. In fact he has even written code to access the global server for a seperate reason! You can see the results by AkaTaka at flserver.com.

Now if only Akataka would fix his FLAcctBrowser hookup I would be happy

EDIT: Learn something new about BBcode every day...
