Server Hosting

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Server Hosting

Question: Is there a Tutorial somewhere that explains how to properly host servers?

I got the requirements that I am going to use as a baseline for the machine itself from this thread:

I need to know some Requirement Info for Hosting a FL server.

Stuff I am looking for is:

Best Cheat Detection
Best REMOTE Admin Tools
How to's, such as - upload stuff, set the server up as a server-side mod, etc...

Why? I may soon be launching a 40-60 player passworded 24/7 RPG server (after I talk to a few more people to discuss the requirements and capabilities) that would be modded.

Any help would be very, very much appreciated.

Cheat Detection and Admin
The IONCROSS Freelancer Server Operator
With this nice handy little tool you can edit players by giving them certain amounts of money, what ship and equipment they have, how friendly/unfriendly they are with certain factions, and it's all very easy to use!

Server-side MODs
Take a peek at my forums on my site, there's a few handy tutorials for setting Encounters, what ship players start with, and also one for setting the Anubis as the starting ship! There are also some good'uns on this site!

Best Cheat Detection - Besides FLSO (highly recommended) there is naturally the v1.1 patch (for servers only!) and Lancerguard (mostly stops invulnerable shields, not allowed Nomad weapons, etc.). A server police or at least a cadre of trustworthy players to check for cheaters is extremely useful for those cheats that just can't be detected (like system wide verbal harassment, newbie killings, dock camping). I also use AkaTaka's tools FLAcctBrowser and FLAcctMon for ancillary work.

Best Remote Admin tool - I use M$' Remote Desktop Connection. I can do everything as if I am in front of the server except run task manager. It's a little bumpy in connection and holding a connection but it's more than adequate for remote admining.

Server-side Mods - Unless you have bandwidth to burn, consider these carefully. I have found only in bits and peices of info on server-side mods. I wish there was a definitive list and tutorial of what can and can't be done and how. It's there in the TLR editing forums but hard to find.

If you are thinking of uploading player files and such, it's a long, tedious renaming process for conversion to a new server. That is unless you actually take over a server's Multiplayer directory then you have the server ID and no two server's with the same ID can be on the global server at the same time (learned THAT lesson the hard way!).

if anyone knows other Projets, please contact me.
I know about a Project called ACE (Anti Cheat Engine) by Moby (isn't ready i think)
And i also know flanticheat (google for it) and FLServerOperator, but this two Programms need to much CPU power to run it on a 40+ Slot Server. You can truly forget those Programms in the current Versions if you want 40+ Slots.

FLSO have no Remote freature itselfs, you have to use software link RealVNC (google for it)
FLAdmin (old but still the best!)

Upload ? install an ftp Server
for Servermod i use the normal FL Mod Manager to activate/deactivate the Server Mods.

Serverside moddable are:
- npc spawns (battleship mods)
- weapon/mine/missel stange
- npc loadouts (nanos/bats/regenerating shilds)
- anti cheat modding (LancerGuard)

Haha, Justinian you crazy bastard you. And which mod are you gonna use, hmm? Excelcia maybe??? It's a real pitty that the server's been down, not to mention the website, but hey, que sera sera. I'm back from the dead, old vet here... wheeee!

Actually, Pinkie, you crazy old coot - A group of guys and I are starting from FRESH INI's to make our own mod. It won't be as in depth (originally) as the Excelcia Mod, bvut we are designing it with RP in mind. It will be ready in approximately 6 to 8 weeks. We are testing it out now.
