Boston Freelancer server

Never started a topic before but there is always a first time for everything.

Boston server's news, rules and other server related posts were at home within our server's police forums, the Argonian Ryders. Well it seems Argonian Ryder's website and forums at sasrecon.org has disappeared. So I am starting anew. Until then all server news will be posted back at the "old" place starting with this post here. Stay posted for updates!

OK, the first round of 'puter components didn't work well at all. (Note to self: you get what you pay for!) I have a second round by next day mail coming today so we'll see how it goes. Hopefully everything will be in place for the free-for-all event (Sirius War I) this Saturday, Nov 29th. Will finish posting this here once everything is up and running as it should be.

By the way, if you play on Boston feel free to check out Boston's new forums. See the sig below for the links.

AWww Eary, did the cheap little AMD not perform you for?

Sing it with me!

I LOVE INTEL!
DUN - DUN - DUN - DUN-DUN!
I LOVE INTEL!
DUN - DUN - DUN - DUN-DUN!

heh... Good luck with the next batch of parts. I have found 2.4C's to be the best value for the dollar at present (even better than AMD's). AMD's are good for gaming, but that's where I draw the line.

There, I feel better now. I'm done with my daily AMD slander. Back to my normal friendly furry self again

i know what u mean about parts not working, i got a 1gb of mem sat on table, cos i cant get the damm thing working with it in

Haha Joe! Actually my instability was due to a cheap PC Chips m/b. I got a nForce2 m/b and I'm much happier now. The Athlon is working great except for one tiny, little thing. AMD LOCKED SOME OF THEIR NEWER CHIPS SO I CAN'T O/C THE FRIGGIN' THING!!! Figures I'd get one of the newer chips and spend an hour trying to do what can't be done. This is a new thing AMD is doing (and they told NO ONE! ) and that shorting of two pins trick is not going to allow these newer chips to change their multiplier. So I'm pleading, any one know or hear about how to overcome this locked multiplier with the newer AMD chips?

ANYHOW, back to FL! The Boston server is up, Athlon XP 2500 Barton core (166 MHz FSB ) and a gig of memory. Player max is now 25 but that's subject to change. Peruse the forum for all the details and a way to converse with me if you wish.

Have a look on Tom's Hardware Guide or on Overclockers.com; have a good rummage, and you just might find an article about overclocking your Athlon (but no promises).

Good Luck!

Eary,

I may be able to get you an unlocked 2500+ (and sell it to you at my cost) if we can get the shipping all sorted out. You know my e-mail if you're interested.

I still see quite a few of them from my suppliers that are the "older" model.

Still searching for an unlocked 2500 Barton. Seems one person even used an electron microscope (see amd.com forums) but they still couldn't find a way to unlock them Oh well, I still have a faster server than before

We are considering RPG on the server. It would be relatively minor, like on Jolt. Need to maintain my TLR affiliation so Liberty is still non-PvP and no client mods required. Come to the forums to peruse our tentative RPG rules and let us know what you think.

Thanx not having any luck any where else. I have a big, honking, pure copper heatsink and I'm dying to use it!

MUUUAAAHHHHAAAA!!!

I did it! With the 1 GB DDR memory rated and running at 400 MHz (FSB 200 MHz) I got the bloody Athlon XP 2500 Barton to run fast! Since it is multiplier locked it runs at 11.5x200 MHz and now it looks like an Athlon XP 3200! The trick? Upped the CPU voltage from 1.675 Vdc to 1.70 Vdc. (To novices out there this negates all warranties! You have been warned!) I put on a big honking copper heatsink and it runs coooool! Been running for 3 days with no problems.

So Joe? AMD rules again, this server screams and I need no other CPU, thank you. Now if Verizon (the ADSL provider my ISP uses) would get their heads out of their, er, (note to self, remember TLR is a family website) heads out of the clouds and maintain bandwidth then I could really cook with lots of players! Well more than the 15 I had before

Eary,

Congrats, you did the overclock!

you think an FSB of 166 to 200 is hot stuff - the Intel C chips overclock like a fat kid on a smartie. I upped my bus from 200 to 280. No extra voltage required With a multiplier of 12, you do the math. And it runs decently cool.

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever buy a CPU again without looking into overclockability. I have customers buying 3.0C's and they could save themselves a couple hundred bucks on a 2.4C and get a faster running chip

Anyway, glad you got it going. The extra RAM will make a big difference - I have still to upgrade mine.

By popular demand, we now have opt-in RPG! Server rules still apply and overrule the new RPG rules if there is any conflict. Feel free to stop by and check it out!

With the new server we have bumped our head against another issue limiting player amounts - ADSL uplink! I am looking into various ways to overcome this without breaking the bank.

EDIT: Making it more explicite.

I now have cable AND ADSL through a dual WAN input, load balancing gateway. Everything seems to be just fine. We have had a bit of lag at first but it seems to have all settled out. Have raised the max to 29 players but haven't seen more than 25. Come help us load the server but keep your cheats away! The players are friendly - unless you are outside Liberty, level 20 or greater and they have a [PIR in their name! Good luck!

For those that come to the server from other, modded servers, turn off the mods first! I get so many first time players logging in and getting kicked & banned within minutes.
