LancerGuard Anti-Cheat Mod

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Heres what I've found the patch does, through looking at the INI's:

It:
- Sets all nomad lasers to do a damage of 0.
- Sets ubershield strength and regeneration to 0.
- Sets armor_scale_invincible scale to 1.
- Adds cloaks to the weapons files.
- Adds cloaks as good to the weaons files.
- Sets nomads to use Nomad Cannons/Nomad Blaster guns instead of nomad lasers.

How that'd cause instability I dont know, as there are no real changes to any key files which would cause instability.

Everything else matches fine to my default files.

In fact, I'd go as far to say that this mod DOESN'T cause instability, as there really is nothing there to cause it!

[Edit
Also, would it be an idea for all admins using this mod to list themselves here and comare notes on their servers performance?

I have been running the latest LancerGuard patch on both my servers. Both have been running 10+ hours with no problems.

Post Wed Jul 02, 2003 10:11 am

update not had a crash since those 3, but leaving the decision up to the main admin as to uninstalling it. ISP run server so stability is more important than keeping cheats out. But if ppl can test this to get it Safe for all servers.

Version is being worked on.

Have a server admin testing it for stability, should have some info by end of tonight. If it's stable, will be released.

Sorry for problems, mod hadn't been tested on active servers prior to the current worked-on version.

btw how about having the version number in the zip name, saves confusion

A special request....can there be some indication what testing is being done or what has been done to get to current/future versions?

I think the work being done on this is to be HIGHLY commended to say the least. But the fact that this isn't your normal alteration/modification means this falls under a different catagory that most other mods. Individuals download mods and use them. These server side mods/alterations are downloaded by individuals, installed and immmediate impact is on 10's of 100's or even thousands of accounts instantly. Careful testing should be done on this type of change.

If you need any help testing things like this, I'd be more than happy to offer up my personal server "TLR-Gold" for testing. Just email me with the details and I'd be happy to be of assist.

Just had a crash after one player had joined, after the server restarted that player rejoined.

I started to question IT about what if any mods it had installed and scared it off, so think its a conflict with a current mod/hack with the ini's

Post Wed Jul 02, 2003 9:21 pm

Was it a new character player, or a returning character?
Just wondering, as if its a new player, then could a particular client mod/hack also be responsible for Browclops server crashing on a similarly 'hacked' new player, and this not be related to the anti-cheat mod?

Post Wed Jul 02, 2003 10:06 pm

There is, I've discovered, a reliable way to crash a server.

I wont say anything more though, the less people that know about it the better.

(I'm not discounting the fact that LancerGuard could also be the cause of instability, which I'm hoping to have fixed ... stinger please check your email).

@Twex new player & character as I said after starting to question him/it/her, IT left the server and the lag that had started when IT joined left with IT leaving.

I am begining to wonder if the recent server unstability of browclops and elite isn't just accidental...
More and more people are starting to play, or at least try, different mod universes. What if the mod-management software isn't completely managing the mods correctly, and is leaving traces of mod configs/files laying around in the clients default FL world, thus screwing up non-mod servers by people who don't even know they are screwing them up?
And what about those people who don't even use mod-management software, and overwrite the files without even backing them up!

~Just a thought~

I think you've hit the nail on the head Twix. It's a catch-22 situation on Elite. If we turn back on the new character creation choice then more and more cheaters/modders will jump on and crash the server. If we keep it like it is, the max number is a pipe dream.

We don't want to discourage the modding community one bit, but when they make the choice to jump out on the MP servers they bring them to their knees and it screws it up for veryone else. If the modders/cheaters could use these nice tools on their own servers everything would be perfect. But that too is a pipe dream.
