--Argonus-- Lag research
Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Hey Argonus, our lag know-it-all
Seems like a good idea, to split the webserver and the freelancer server on different PC's. Both connected to eachother with an ethernet 100mbit LAN.
Let my main PC (Intel 2.5) handle the freelancer server and my 2nd PC (Athlon 1700XP+) run the internet server.
Then what is the best PC to run the game on? I guess it will be the internetserver then, because the other one is busy calculating all the freelancer instructions.
Maybe some improvement will be gained by this. I'll send you the details later when I made this connection.
With kind regards,
Europremium-OP-R8R

The computer that FLServer is running on should be good for playing on as long as there are less then 20 players online (somewhere between 10-20 actually...you would have to check that yourself...I find it unplayabe after about 18 people and I have an Althlon XP 2000+)
If there are more...you would have to play on the other computer.
This MAY change after the patch is released...but I don't know...since I don't have the patch.
Might have to ask Akataka about the lag...If he can log in on the computer that he's running Elite when there are a lot of people

I promised to write back when I changed the internetconnection to another PC (internetserver), and I can say that I see some nice results.
So, now the firewall and internetconnection is processed by another PC connected by Ethernet 100mbit to the Freelancer-server.
When I was connected to the server before the change, I increased Msec by 3 to 4 when I was in a big fight. Now it won't get higher then 1Msec anymore.
It took me 27 hours (including sleep) to get the new configuration working but it was worth the trouble

There's something I can't figure out.
Right now...I am not getting any complaints of lag...WHich is good....But I have hat about 6-10 modders on my server today....which made it VERY unstable...Restarted about 5 times today....One dork even came in and flaunted the fact that he was flying a Nomad Battleship (Have the screenshot to prove it) Shortly thereafter...my server crashed.
What I can't figure out is the CPU and Page File usage.
no matter what...even after restarting...my CPU Usage will peg and stay at 100% no matter what I do, but the PF Usage almost always stays between 345-400 MB....The PF Usage I gather is good...But I can't figure out why the CPU Usage is pegged at 100%....When it's there...Even when I have 30+ players online....not many people complain of lag....It's only when the server has been running 20 hours straight...or there's a damn modder...If any one has any ideas other then the server memory leak...let me know.
Programs I have running: MySQL, IIS (was like this before them) NAV2k3, FLMon (To restart the server in event of crash) and FLServer. Makes no difference if I turn off IIS and MySQL or NAV2K3.
I have an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ with 1 Gig of PC2700 RAM.
There's a REASON I don't want any mods of any sort in my server....It keeps crashing when some moron logs in with one.

Hello Argonus,
I play mostly on your server and I must say it does really good. I do get some lag when there are 30 or more people on ....and or ....arround mid morning Alaska time. Alaska time is one hour earlyer than west coast so if it is 1 pm west coast it is 12 noon Alaska time. The lag isn't too bad other than it is hard to kill enemy ships do to them fliping arround he he. I havn't played in the last week do to work. It will be another week till I can play....then watch out cuz I'll be there he he. I am running a 1.7 gig P4, 512 RDRAM, 64 mg Geforce 3, on 240k up and 320k down ADSL connection. I plan on making Argonus server my home.... and thanks for hosting...

There is a way that seams right to a man.... but in its end leads to distruction.....

Argonus,
Just came across this thread. I had the same proc usage when I used the original version of flmon to restart the Freelancer program. The later version worked well with no pegged CPU usage. Might want to try that if you haven't already figured out what it is.
An excerpt from my post 17-4-2003
"After the first program failure I installed the utility to auto restart FLServer (tested on another machine first, it worked), didn't like the 100% proc usage, found the 1.04 version, tested that, it worked, installed it on the server"
