--Argonus-- Lag research

I have noticed this:

I am based in Arkansas USA...
When I get people logged on from the following places, I get reports of yellow lag alerts from them...but it's intermittant.

Canada, Germany, Austria and The Netherlands.

I get intermittant red lag from Eastern Asia/Malaysia.

I get very little lag complaints from the USA and UK clients.

Yesterday I hit my record...33 people at once...Only lag complaints I had were from Austria, Canada, Malaysia...and one person in the UK...

I even get people logging on with dialup...They admit it's annoying...but the game is playable. I have one client that dials up (Not sure where from tho) the only problem we had when he was formed up, was getting lost in trade lanes and jump gates (Took forever sometimes for him to come out)

I have personally logged on to Elite when it's maxed out...and don't run into much lag...Sometimes it is bad...But since Elite started with adding all the ship mods..I have stayed away from it, so I don't know what it's like personally.

I would imagine all the servers get a good cross section of people from around the world...I would like to hear if anyone else has done any lag research.

But since Elite started with adding all the ship mods

We have not opened the mod gates on Elite. There is only one MOD approved and it's not being used much. All other MOD's are off limits

I think a lot of the connection problems {lag} are internet router related. Reason, they are intermittent at best. The best thing to do would be to do some IP tracing.

Ok, Ok...So it's only ONE mod....lol

That's still one more mod then I allow.

I have had some people do tracert and they get fair returns for going around the world...

um - which mod is allowed now ? did i miss something?

Elite is running a ship mod....You can supposedly fly Slave I (maybe some other ships) from Starwars.

Do u think that because I have an internet router that is why I cannot host servers?

Post Tue May 20, 2003 7:27 pm

To host games while behind a router...you have to use Port Forwarding, and enable ports 2300-2400

There's a Micro$oft KB article on that.

Go into your router...and go to the Port Forwarding section.

What it's called, vairies on what your router is.

Hi Argonus,

Regarding the lags, i've been connecting to different servers close or far from me (I'm in Switzerland). And i was on --Argonus-- yesterday night... I had couples of yellow lag alerts (mainly during fights involving large number of ships), and i got disconnected once (around midnight GMT), took almost five minutes to get back on...

What i can say is that upon what I've noticed, lags are maybe more caused by the number of ships on screen at the same time, than by proximity to the server (I had so much red lags on a german server it was almost non playable...) or bandwith capacity...

Anyway, thanks for running the --Argonus--, see ya around one of these days...

I think it's both, proximity, and current usage...Battles and number of people online.

Because at the time some people see lag...others don't see any at all.

I know that my friend, who goes by Dittertain, is one town over from me....He hardly ever sees lag, even when one of the players from the UK sees lag...So...It's not totally proximity...or usage/battles...

I know a lot of it relies on your connection quality.

Broadband, from what I hear, is a rather new thing in most parts of Europe....Prior to that, some internet was provided by the Power Company...Over the Electric lines... Odd....

Who knows...May be a moot point when the patch is released...

Dear Arganus,

I have 1 question for you, if you are hosting so many people like 33, what MSEC does flserver.exe give you and how much CPU-usage in % is taken?

I host 11 players and the highest msec I ever seen was 21msec and 70% CPU usage. I guess that lots of players had large battles over then.

I hear no complaints about lag. Sometimes a yellow icon appeard I head, but it's for a short period.

What is a common msec? I heard some advise to try the green limit (=32msec) as an average. But is the server still playable then? And if every1 get's fighting I guess that will be far above average usage (=40-45msec or so)

Please can some1 help me, because I cannot join online. I have to play LAN on my 2nd PC and I do not know how far I can go with Msec !

Thanks in advance,

I am running with 35 people max with about 25-30 average actually online

Server load usually hovers between 25-50MSecs (Spiking occasionally to a lot higher)

CPU load usually hovers around 75-90%

I cannot play on my computer if there are more then 15 people online....Lag for me is HORRENDOUS.

I have to use my backup computer (Which is only slightly slower) to log in via lan also...Rumor has it that the patch will fix this also...Since I don't have the patch myself...I can;t verify this.

Thanks for the info !!

I upgraded to 12 players that can join now and indeed, the CPU is no problem. Sometimes is goes to 28msec and no yellow/red icons with my players. Only the bottleneck now is my 512/128kbit connection. I continuesly watch how much Kb is being uploaded to my players and it has an average of 7Kb a sec. Sometimes it reaches the max 11.5Kb and that gives the yellow icon.

So I guess 12 players is nearly the max for my connection. Already called my provider for a 768/256 connection.

Again, thanks for the help. I finally have more info to go on now.

Greetings,

In re: to latency, I started playing on dialup (thank god, I have cable now), and it was playable if I was pinging the server at less than 200ms. Sure, it would spike from time to time and I'd see yellow/red indicators, but overall it was playable most of the time. I'd have to lead targets by a bit more than the little "aiming cross", but it worked well enough.

Can't compare to the 15-20ms I get on Elite now, though *L*.

Hi again Argonus;

I've been connected to --Argonus-- tonight at 20h15 till 20h30 (Swiss Time) and i experienced hardest lag. The icon was flashing red most of the time and yellow sometime... I look for ping time on FL but ????? was appearing. So I took the IP and tried to ping it directly, after an manual set to 15 sec. it stills time out...

I cant explain it, but I know the other times were good, so for now I'll just make the Argonians Ryders famous on an other site...

I have a feeling that the computer is being hit really hard right now....

I am forced (Due to money restrictions) to put my web server temporarily on the same computer....

I will gladly accept donations of the following:

2 512 SDRAM sticks (PC133)
1 30-40 gig hard drive
1 ATX Mid-Full Tower case

Once I get those items, the server and the webserver will be separated.

I have been building my own forum for the Argonian Ryders...so it's probably been killing the CPU with Lag.
