Server Specifications

Hi everybody! I'm new here, but in the past two weeks, I've become all too familiar with this game.

I was a die hard MechWarrior until I found FL. I have already turned my MW4:Vengeance server into a Freelancer server (DONT PANIC). The thing is, it's a pretty old machine, and I have some cash to invest.

I have two options: Use my 1.133 GHz Athlon to host FL, and buy something rediculous for my personal use, or buy a dual processing monster to host, and keep my Athlon for personal use.

Any advice?

I have been looking into this myself. Even through we have a very nice server, 4 Xeon 700 Mhz Compaq server, the performance, at this time, is not has good as we had hoped. FL-Server does use mult-processing, but I have yet to get a baseline on how efficent it is. I suspect, and Browclops noted this to me, that two high speed processors are better than four mid speed processors. Therefore, I have been researching into a dual MP system.

The best bang for your buck seems to be going with dual AMD 2600+ MP processors. Processors and Motherboard (egghead) will run about 650, but YMMV. So, for around $1000-1100, depending on RAM, HD, Case, and P/S you use, you could have a nice FL server. This is assuming that you use a low-end video, inexpensive HD, since the server is hosting, not playing the game. Those spare parts you have lying around gathering dust may work fine for a bare bones FL server. HD speed is not much of a factor speed wise for FL-Server. For $200 more, you can use the new AMD 2800+ MP processors with the newer Barton core and a larger cache. Increase in performance may not be worth it, however. If, in the future FL dies or you get tired of it, buy a nice top of the line video, fast HD, and you have yourself a nice gaming computer too. The new Quake, BTW, makes use of multi-processors...
