hiding my server......

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

hiding my server......

Is there a way to let people join my server, without listing it on the internet. Like some games allow you to type in an IP to join, or have a favorites list. I am running a dedicated server and I have friends I want to join, but I don't want my ISP to know I am running a server.

I know I read about it somewhere, but can't seem to find that info now.

Do you seriously think an ISP would check all multiplayer games on the internet to find you running a 'server'? I think not. By a server, they (your ISP) mean a Web server where you serve internet pages and files. Since such a server generates lots more traffic than a Freelancer server, it will be of very little or no concern to your ISP whether you run a FL server or not.

Thanks for replying to my question, but I don't totally agree with you. I do know that my ISP has busted a "few" peeps running dedicated game servers. They have a "two strike" policy, the first is a warning, the second is a permanent ban from service! I don't want to even get the first warning.
I have my server password protected anyway, so no one beside my friends can join anyway. So if anyone can still answer my question, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

EDIT: Nevermind..... I found the documentation on how to do it in the readme on the CDROM.

If you have a firewall you can block port 2300 which I believe is the port that adds you to the master server list. Make sure you have port 2302 open though

Stratcar, ISP's don't surf the web in the look out for servers under there service, let alone fire up games looking. Err, they can tell solely by how much bandwidth you r wasting, and that my friend is a much more efficient, faster, and easier way then to waste time... ;p

My 2 cents...

Your provider can only monitor the amount of information you're getting/sending, and assume what you are doing from that. If they're REALLY geeky, they can snoop deeper to tell exactly what you're doing w/ that mountain of transmitted information (not as likely). It could be file sharing, it could be hosting a game. Unless they snoop deeply, they can't tell the diff.

If you're meeting the contract obligations, it doesn't actually matter WTF you're doing with your bandwidth. You pay for it, it is available. End of story. The hard part comes if your contract forbids specific things that you're trying to get away with. In that case, welcome to the "gray zone", and good luck. They have lawyers readily available, you have ... well.... your word and whatever cash you want to throw at a case you'll probably lose ... : / You can probably get away with it for a while, but when it comes to the "line", you'll likely lose in short order.
