LAN party on 1 copy of FL?

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

LAN party on 1 copy of FL?

Hey all,

I'd like to setup a LAN FL server for some of my friends during our next game night. Unfortunately FL here in hawaii is $50 bucks a copy and some of my buds are non-believers of FL goodness.

Is it possible to play FL on a LAN server from multiple installations of the same CD?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I dont think so, but you could convince them by sending me several thousand dollars.

IT WORKS!!!

Here's what you need to do in order to host a Freelancer LAN party off of one copy of Freelancer:

1. Make a server only installation on the dedicated server.
2. Install FL on all client machines using the original copy.
3. Burn a copy of FL for each client machine.
4. Start the server.
5. Start the game on a client machine with the master CD in the drive.
6. At the main menu, swap the master CD out for a burned copy.
7. Go to the multiplayer menu and connect through the LAN server list.
8. Repeat steps 5 thru 7 for each game client.

** The nice thing is that the account ID's appear to be randomly generated whenever the mulitplayer game is run for the first time. So all the game sessions are seen as unique even though they're from the same copy!

This was tested on my home network using 3 computers. 2 game clients and one server installation.

Enjoy! %D

Get a CRACK for the game...

You have a point there, the game is for sale on Hawai.

But not in Europe, 12 days to go and counting. Ever wondered why so many illegal copies are circulating on European servers? Not because of the war.

Great...Just post instructions to pirate this game.

the great thing about it, was that it should not work WITHOUT the master copy to start the game, which means it is I guess about the only solution that does NOT INCLUDE a describtion that can be used to pirate aswell.

if some one would have explained how to crack the game ... or get a working non-cd version, etc ... all could be used for pirating, this one works not, the cd protection should check at the startup so "just burn the cd" should lead to an error on startup, where you need one original cd

(btw this could be even intended by the devs, or semi-intended)
Sigh, I miss the good ol time where you need 1 copy of the game for up to 3 players, 2 for up to 5 and 3 for up to 8 players.

imo a much more fair solution for lan play.
and not a bad pr aswell, cause to play sp/internet you could still need a cd, which means if they liked the game really that someone showed them on a lan they have to buy ^-^

Interesting. The only way I could play MP is on LAN since my 56k is Uber Laggy. Now, too bad my friend disappeared. Just like him to run off somewhere when I find such an awesome game. :p

Thank you,

argonus,

don't think it's pirating since none of the additional clients will work without booting the game using the original cd.

Captain Jenkins,

I hate searching for cracks through nasty java appletted porn sites. Were you actually being helpful you might have posted a hint on where to get one. But you didn't... So screw you.

I could point you to a site that has all the crackz you want, and no porn or anything else like that, it is also a good site for latest gaming news and normal (legal) patches, but because of the crackz part I will only tell you if you promise NOT TO PASS YOUR GAME OUT TO ANYONE WHO HASN"T BOUGHT IT OUTSIDE OF A ONE TIME LAN PARTY, people should buy the games they like, and as for you CD-copying, plenty ways to get past that, I have a program that emulates any known copy-protection for burnt discs and/or also allows you to mount an image of a disk that is on your computer as a fake dvd-rom drive, quite usefull since I hate cd-swapping with a passion. Your cd-copying was obviously not done corectly, it is quite easy to copy the cd protection with the data if you have even a somewhat good cd-r drive, I got mine for $20 at officemax (only thing good about them are their occasional sales) and it has full RAW mode recording to allow doing a correct 1:1 copy of protected cd's, so these drives are not hard to come by. As for pirating game, it should not be done, I own every game I have ever used, current collection totals 67 games for $45 or more, 36 for $30-$45, and 128 for under the $30 range, and those are games that came in a single box, remember that sometimes those are games and expansion combos or the occasional 4 game-game pack, just counted as one, strange part is, I have no money, don't know how I keep getting all of them, mabye it is the fact I only eat once a day (see what happens when you conserve your money )

Thanks for the thought Overmind. But I'm fine without the crack.

Just thought I'd post this to share in case anyone else was planning on introducing some friends to FL.
