Can''t see chat

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Can''t see chat

I'm hosting an FL server on the internet, and for some reason, my character on my own server can't see other people's chat text, and they can't see mine. I'm not sure if they can see each others' or not (just started the server for me and a few friends, and they haven't all been on at the same time yet. heh.). They can see the console, just not my character's text. I have a NetworkEverywhere router and I already opened up my port forwarding range to be able to play the game, do I need to do something else as well? Has anyone experienced this before? (Please know that I'm pretty much a n00b in regard to networking/firewall stuff, so you'll probably have to explain how to do what you tell me to do.) Thanks for any help in advance.

Well, no one's responded yet, so I figured I would explain a bit more of what I've experienced. No one can talk to anyone using system chat. Group chat and personal messages seem to work fine, though. The system chat just doesn't appear. I haven't experienced this on any other servers except my own, so I don't know if it's some filter I have to turn back on or what. I've looked through all the freelancer menu options and I still can't find anything. The system running the server has an AMD xp 2400+ on an Asis A7n8x, 512mb DDR RAM and a GeForce 4 Ti4200. The system that runs the server is the same system that I play the game on.

Following is a direct cut-and-paste from the readme file in my Freelancer install folder. It is from the "Manual corrections" section. I don't know if this is pertinent to your problem. I can just hope it helps

Page 36 states that a "System Chat" is to everyone in Multiplayer. This is not the case. You can only chat with people inside the system you are currently visiting with this chat filter.

Hmm... I'm gonna have to try that. Think I was in a different system at the time, but I thought I had talked to people who weren't in my system as well. Maybe not. If that's how it is, that's cool, cuz after playing like this for a while it started to almost make sense that you'd have to establish direct connection to another ship to speak with them, so it sort of played into the mechanics of the game. Thanks for the help. I'll let you know if it worked or not...

Whee! I can't believe how stupid I feel now. I could've swore we were in the same systems before.. I guess not. Anyway, thanks for pointing out the obvious for me. I really appreciate it. Now if only I could solve my crashing problem...

As for the server crashing.... put it on a different machine it will be much more stable. I ran the server on a P4 3gig - 1gig-PC3200, stayed up for about 24 hours. then started the client on the same machine, a couple of minutes later... CRASH!! Coincidence? No way, tried the same experiment a few times same problem. Moved the server to a Athlon XP2000+ left the client on the P4 - played on it for hours!

ahh... I figured it was just a bug with hosting the server on the same machine, cuz no one else has experienced this on my server. :/ ahh well... don't have another machine capable of running the server atm. Thanks for the input, though.
