How about: FL Server for UNIX

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

How about: FL Server for UNIX

A FL server that would run on a unix server would be awsome. I'd pay $20 a month for a unix ISP that would run the server 24/7...

... They'd prolly do it, too... But, I doubt micosoft would write the code for another platform.

Yeah i wish

Meanwhile... Have you tried running the server in wine?

Yeah, I agree, I would love to run a FL dedicated server on my Linux machine as I'm sure it would be very stable. But I am fairly positive Microsoft won't be porting it to a competing OS and I highly doubt someone will be able port it to Linux/Unix by themselves (though I have been wrong before). Personally I wouldn't reccomend wine unless you have a hell of a good system because the emulation overhead will eat up system resources like mad (I know, I know, wine doesn't like to be called an emulator). Oh well, looks like you'll have to stick with Windows.

Wine? why not trying to launch it under wine?

Catzone, look at above reply, Wine eats up system resources. However, if you're running a truly dedicated Linux /Unix server (no other programs running ever), and it is a high end desktop (1.5GHz) or higher, lots of memory and a RAID array, it may work.

OK, if anyone read (or anyone cares), I did a quick test with WINE. First of all, the program itself was lagging as the cursor would "skip" across the screen. Second, the server failed loading when it got to DirectX loading. WINE's implementation of DirectX API is not good enough and I'm not willing to spend the money to get WineX and test it. Someone else is more than willing to try, however, from what I gather, WineX's DirectX implementation focuses on video a.k.a. Direct3D and OpenGL, not DirectPlay. So it looks like FLserver for unix/linux will not be happening (at least not easily).
