Windows Vista/Freelancer

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Until Microsoft gets all the bugs worked out of Vista, I'm sticking with XP.

Just because it's the "latest and greatest" ... doesn't mean it's useful or practical.

I agree Rankor, and so does my wife. Thank goodness for recovery disks. Vista has been totally eradicated from our home PC and good ol' XP Pro has returned. It took us the better part of our weekend but everything's running smoothly. That's the second disastrous thing Microsoft has ever done: Create Vista. The first obviously, was dumping Digital Anvil and any chance of a Freelancer sequel.

In a previous post I mentioned that I would try to use a virtual program that would allow Windows and other programs on a Mac. It works, but Parallels Desktop does not support any version of DirectX . . . yet.

Apple support says that Parallels will have a 3D version on or around October, just as OS 10 Panther is scheduled to appear. Supposedly this new version supports DirectX to allow Windows Games to run on Mac. Good thing this was a trial version I used. I'll try again in October.

I too was able to resolve the problem of connecting to other Freelancer servers (both LAN and Internet) by uninstalling Norton AntiVirus 2007 from my Vista machines.

I also discovered that Vista's built-in IPv6 protocol presents a problem for Freelancer on local LANs. I was able to resolve this by turning off IPv6 in the Properties for my "Local Area Connection".

However, while turning off IPv6 resolves the problem for PC to PC connections on a local LAN, it doesn't resolve the problem when using the Freelancer server and client on the same machine, since Vista continues to use IPv6 for local-link traffic, even though you have disabled IPv6 for host-to-host traffic. To resolve that problem, I had to disable Vista's built-in isatap and Teredo network adapters in Device Manager (they appear if you choose to Show Hidden Devices).

A little Google research has revealed some information that to me indicates the reason anti-virus software and Freelancer might conflict on Vista is because of how anti-virus software interacts with Vista's built-in IPv6 services. For example, using the Norton Removal Tool in Vista will break the Teredo network adapter, which may indicate that Norton Anti-Virus is mucking about with IPv6 in a way that is causing problems for Freelancer.

Also, the following article seems to indicate that Norton Antivirus for Vista includes some functionality designed to prevent security problems with the Teredo network adapter.

Further research may yeild a registry hack or some other tweak that will enable anti-virus programs to peacefully coexist with Freelancer.

to everyone who is having trouble loading mod manager in vista

simply run the install as admin to do this:-
find the install/setup.exe
right click and goto "properties"
then click "compatability"
check the box that says "run this program in compatability mode for"
and select to run it as "XP service pack 2"
then check the box at the bottom to "run as admin"
then click apply
then ok
do this on the freelancer desktop shortcut after install as well

First, thanks to everyone who have been posting to this thread. You really helped me clear up the issues I was having getting FL running under Vista. Good job to you all.

Next, there is a long term method for getting installers and programs to run without seeing the requestor asking you to allow the program to run.

You need to make sure the login you are using is enabled as an Administrator. Then you need to go into -->Control Panel-->User Accounts

When you see the window that shows your account and different things you can do, under the heading that says 'Make Changes to Your User Account' choose the very bottom option. It should say 'Turn User Account Control on or off'.

Set it to Off. It may ask you to restart, but thats unlikely. Once you have done that, you will no longer be bothered by requestors every time you run an installer or program that has permissions that Vista doesn't like.

That setting will ONLY affect the chosen account. All other accounts will continue to exhibit the annoying requestors until you do the same to them.

Hope that helps everyone!

Now that I ha to get rid of Norton AV to get FL to work, I need a new AV program.
Does anybody know where I can get a good cheap or free AV program?
I'm unemployed and don't have alot of income to spend on one.

I figured it out, its not a problem with DX10 or IPv6, but with the anti virus programs. The only AV that we have found to work is AVG. With Norton, McAffee, or Avast installed FL will not work in MP. There is either an incompatibility with these programs in Vista or these AVs are not coded right for Vista.

This was made by an earlier poster in the thread. I use AVG myself, although with Windows XP, not Vista. It's a fairly solid scanner, and it's free.

In addition to AVG, though, I recommend scanning with http://housecall.antivirus.com as well.

Unfortunately, my problem isn't with mods or online play, but just with getting the game to run with sound. SOME effects play, but no dialogue. Since I've never played before, this is a bit of an issue.

I've updated the sound driver (Nvidia GEForce 6150 SE nForce 430), updated DirectX, and downloaded the Freelancer patch. I've tried running it in XP SP2 compatible mode. I've searched the computer for any codecs, and didn't find any (needless to say, the VIsta menus have made it well nigh impossible to find things the way you used to be able to) And I've tried violent cursing. None of these have worked. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I tried the procedure in the first post but still cannot get freelancer to even run.
Im running Vista Business on an Asus F3Jv Laptop
C2D T7200 2.0GHz
2GB RAM
Geforce Go 7600

It plays all the intro videos then it goes to the loading page (the one which just says freelancer) then just exits with a app crash popup.
Ive tried reinstalling heaps of times nothing seems to change the problem.
If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated, i love this game and really really want to play it again!!!

edit: This is without any mods at all

Did you try (long shot) with Windows 2000 compatibility mode?
