Windows Vista/Freelancer

I have finally accomplished loading mods with Vista. But still cant play online.
I am happy to play SP Mods for know. Here is what i did.

First make sure you disable UAL/Firewall/Virus Protection and Defender on
the Windows Vista OS. Restart Then I >>>>>>>>>>>
Installed clean copy of Freelancer CD. Then to get it to play on Vista you have
to install XML 4.0 Located on the freelancer cd it self . Open disk then double
click REDIST folder. Then double click MSXML3.msi file. Window will come up
for you to INSTALL. After install RESTART. Now you can run freelancer on
Vista. Next I went to Lancers Reactor and in downloads on page 4 I loaded
the Quick Fix Patch by Louva-Dues which installs all fixes for freelancer and
installs SDK 1.3. Now restart again. Next download Freelancer Mod Manager
1.31. Restart again. Now pick one good Mod addon and download it. I used
Discovery 4.80 because it works with FLMM 1.3 and installs very clean with
Vista. From FLMM on desktop Launch Freelancer. And it works thanks to
everyone who gave me feedback at Lancers Reactor i was able to figure this
all out. Thanks Guys

Edit - I combined your other thread with this one as both are about the same question,

This is absolute bogus. I'm playing free game, not retail, FREE games like GPotato's Rappelz, and SpaceCowboy on Vista and I cant play a game like Freelancer???? (which is made by microsoft BTW)

All my games work (with an exception of Unreal Tournaments). Why cant Freelancer work?

By now most games had already came out with a patch to work on Vista. (Rappelz had one, and so did Live for Speed.) Why in the world cant Freelancer run online?

At some point, someone here will figure a way for it to work. Freelancer has been out too long for MS to create a patch for Vista.

hope so, I dont want Freelancer to die because of this

It's a problem with DirectX 10. Microsoft will be releasing a patch within the next two weeks.

is the patch out yet?

I figured it out, its not a problem with DX10 or IPv6, but with the anti virus programs. The only AV that we have found to work is AVG. With Norton, McAffee, or Avast installed FL will not work in MP. There is either an incompatibility with these programs in Vista or these AVs are not coded right for Vista.

Someone already figured out what to do against the horribly mouselag?

I'm stickying this thread to prevent repition of Vista problems. This way maybe all the answers will be in the same place.

You're absolutely right - I was misinformed by Microsoft.

I use AVG, and was trying to uninstall NIS. I could never uninstall it until I used the tool below. Anyway, the problem is that your running AV program was registered as a service, and is running under a Full System Administrator priviledged profile (even if you aren't logged on as an Admin). It's a background program. The apps aren't problematic with Vista's architecture - it's a problem with Vista's security and layering. As of right now, the only solution is to uninstall your AV program.

AVG is a very good program to use, it catches everything. If you are worried because it didn't block FL's access, don't - because AVG can auto-detect multiplayer gaming requests, as it says on the website.

Here is an easy way to un-install Norton products:

Get this:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ts ... 3108162039

It's the Norton Removal Tool. It will remove any trace of any Norton AV/FW product detected. That was the problem I was having.

Try it on your systems if you have NIS installed or if it appears in Vista's Uninstall Programs list.

Sorry for the confusion.

Is there anyone out there having a problem playing Freelancer with Windows Vista other than me?
The wife updated our PC from XP Professional to Vista Home Premium, and when I try to play Frontierspace, first the equipment and missions (bar) menu seem to scramble themselves. Mind you I'm playing the game from the windows.old file, but after a while, the game crashes. I tried everything, including spacecadet67's method, but nothing. And I'm tired of Vista asking permission to run not only Freelancer but every other game and application I use. Can anyone find a stable and secure answer to this problem? I'm going to the laptop because it's still running XP Pro(the misses is NOT going to upgrade that!).

However I am going to try something that just might work. I use an iMac for my professional work (digital photography), and there's a program called Parallels Desktop. It allows you to run Windows 3.1 or later in a Mac OS X environment. I'm going to use a demo copy with Windows XP Pro. If this works, I'll post my results immediately.
