Anyway... I don't think anyone has made movable bases yet (that you can dock with.) Hopefully they will be able to overcome that.

Actually, TradeWars 2002 did not have that... Yankee Trader had that. The planet was called, "the wanderer." Sadly, I don't have Yankee Trader running on my BBS, but I do still have the file.

PS: Register Exitilus, that game has it all, prolly the best door i ever played, outside of Trade Wars of course. BRE and FE are 1337 too All you guys readings this come by the BBS, you will never have to much fun as with games like Exitilus, Barren Realms Elite, Falcons Eye, Legend of the Red Dragon. These games are Addictive as hell!!
I've been playing the MP version of freelancer for the past couple days, and i'm bored with it, quite frankly. Its replay value isn't very high for me. I'm thinking that this is probably because there's no incentive.
There's no list of the best on a particular server. I don't have to worry about my arch nemesis coming in at 3 in the morning, using merchant freighters to wear down my cannon, then using interdictors to blow all the fighters off my planet in 2-3 turns, and stealing my warp capable level 7 volcanic citadel. of course, those were minor losses considering that was only the enterance to my "bubble"
The thing freelancer developers have neglected, and i'm sure that it isn't surprising that they did, afterall, they're developers (GRIN), modders are the real smart ones... is that its only fun to kill NPC's for so long. The real challange is growing and beating your PC competitors... and in freelance MP, i see no real competition PVP stuff going on. If any of you know servers where there is more of this happening, and a real challange, please let me know! I'd like to strut around in my FL version of a maxed out Interdictor cruiser (Sure, they wern't very useful for flying, but damn the blues in a maxed ISS sure did frown when they saw you... especially when they remembered they toasted you in your colt earlier when you were SSTing)

Humblehawk: You hit the nail on the head. It's fun for a while but there's no longterm incentive.
Things I'd like to see changed /modded:
1) Dependency on fuel in cargo holds to use thrusters (not standard thrust).
2) Logging off of the server without docking leaves your ship in play, just sitting there in space ready to be destroyed (I remember running out of turns in TW w/a Cargo Transported loaded with precious equipment and the feeling of anxiety as I logged back on the next day to await my destiny). Ok..proably not possible since this is in the server code most likely.
3) Player purchasable Battleships and/or larger cargo ships
4) NPCs w/attitude governing the New York system to protect the noobs
5) Player purchasable home bases (I doubt planets are possible but that would be nice too)
6) Persistent groups (ala corporations in TW)
7) Player purchasable persistent mines (to construct minefields) which would require a ship that could hardpoint mount a specific type of persistant mine class.
Remove regenerating shields (for most ships) and boost the shield battery capacity of ships.
9) Possible removal of nanobots (for most ships). Force all repairs to be done at bases or change nanabot repair to repair only subsystems and not hull damage. Speaking of which, can anyone confirm whether damaged sub systems actually malfunction?
There's more but that's a starter
(edited: I doubt that many of my ideas may not be possible without changes to the core of FL...unfortunately)

ok i havnt read all the posts, so if sumthing like this has already been said im sorry
firstly i never heard of tradewars.... but the idea of buying a planet and calling it home is what i really would love to see.... but im rather skeptical
at the moment, to implement any ini changes the server has to be restarted........ im not sure how possible it is to create an event on which a station / object would be spawned and become operational (or applying cloak to something ? like docking rings around planets that only appear when the planet has been purchased)
but, without information being stored in ini files (atm i think this is a completely unknown area) if the server went down for a breif second, entire planets wud be lost, and cash wud be just vanishing............. not nice :/
as for minefields..... im pretty sure these cant be cloaked or spawned..... there for these are probably a big no :/
as for weapon platforms... if its possible to do the planet, then im sure these are possible... like 4 clocked un-operational platforms out side... and you can buy up to 4 of them then they appear
</long post>
anyway, hope it is possible..... but afaik no1 is going to have the knowledge to pull this off for a while

You just washed up here or something?

you're right norfleet -- but remember I haven't played TW since like 1996, so I get a break
And, every smart badie had a group of goodies planet farming... the biggest flaw you can make in a TW game is to think planet farming is just for the goodies.. first off, you have to have a home.... so its important for defense... second, upgrade a port and have an oceanic planet making 32,000 organics every few days, it takes 1-2 turns to sell it and you make tons of cash.... and still have time For SSTing...

You know, with all these people here reminiscing about TW... we should get a game going
