Death Penalty: Too Low?

Does anybody else believe the death penalty is too low? At the moment, an increasingly large number of cheap "Get rich quick" strategies or faction-buildling tricks involve suiciding at some point. Obviously, the loss of all cargo and carried weapons is not sufficient to discourage such obviously wrongful behavior.

Any ideas on how to increase it? I was thinking it would be nice if, on death, players were fined cash for the value of their ship.

There should be a little bit more of a penalty for dying. Maybe if you're not carrying anything, you should lose some money for "insurance fees" or something. But if you get blown up with a full load of diamonds, you're pretty much screwed.

what are you on about?

I think the death penalty is fine. This is an action RPG, not an MMORPG where dying is a part of "game balance."

Incidentally, how does dying play into faction building?

One of the early tricks going around for easy faction building involves attacks on various items, followed by a subsequent messy death due to inability to actually fight off the retaliatory attacks, the subsequent messy death being actually part of the strategy, rather than a side-effect.

that sounds like a gimped way of doing things

i agree the death penalty is good but it makes it even better if some of the faction rep's would go down because if you have a neutral rep you can't buy everything so it would be a soft xtra penalty

losing money is good to but your money is on your neural net and you don't have it in your pocket so that wouldn't be realistic.

this whole idea seems stupid, why have something for mmog's in single player?

The money isn't lost because it falls out of your pocket, shadow. The money is lost because you have to replace the ship which you CRASHED. That should cost you some money, no?

And it's not something for single player. It's something for multiplayer. In single player, if you crash your ship, it's game over time.

you should lose your ship. it blew up. buy another one. you also lost your weapons, shields, etc.

buy another from where?

I totally agree. There definitely should be a death penalty. In an MP game, if you're not carrying cargo, an easy way to get back to your last base is to just allow yourself to die. You lose nothing and you get a free ride back to the last base you docked at. It just doesn't seem right.

Personally, I would like to see one of the two following options:

You either lose all your money -or- you lose your ship/gear and you restart at Manhattan in a stock Starflier.

I'd even love a "hardcore" option. You die and your character is gone.

How about, when you die, you start at the nearest base with a ship that is equivalent to your level.

One thing is for sure, there should be more server options regarding death penalties. I mean what’s the point of killing another player if there is practically no penalty for death? There should be some way to up the penalty so that death has some consequence associated with it.

escape pod

there should be a very bad ship called the escape pod fitted into every other ship.......... it has a small cargo hold (say 10) and can hold 1 weapon (and a few nanobots/batts)

and to be nice it can be newbified(cant be destroyed) to stop people from constantly doing it (i remember playing TDZK a freelancer style mmorpg, if you got destroyed in the escape pod, your escape pod was fitted with an escape pod, lol)

in this, players can easily earn at least a tiny bit of money to get a better ship

imo it wud be better like that for MP
