Adding systems as server.

I dont know if its been talked about yet looked trhu a few forums cant find it but if i make new systems on my server would clients be able to come to those systems, because that would be great if you can change stuff server side and the clients can use this aswell that way every server would be diffrent.

Unfortunately, while clients can connect to a server with custom systems added without downloading any additional files, there are issues when they approach or attempt to dock at gates to that system (Usually they don't see the gate and/or crash). They can't even get into a system if they don't have the files. At least, this is what I've discovered on my server so far.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

You're kidding, Shiv? So to get a mod to work on a server you have to distribute your changes to all of the clients? If that's the case then modding is going to be way more trouble than it's worth unless they patch the game to work differently. I haven't even tried multiplayer changes... I'll have to test those out tomorrow before I do too much more work.

I still haven't heard with any authority if they're planning an MMO version of this game, if so then I can see them not wanting to help the community with mods, but if this is going to be it, with what I would think would be a low-manhour patch, they could probably add in a server->client download for the universe to give multiplayer something to do.

I had visions of something like a MUD in space where you could edit the universe as you want and change prices and ships. And if each of the clients has to stay up to date with the server files, that's not horrible for the private server that I'm running, but it is a lot more work.

Actually most games that are modded require the client to download the files (eg. new maps, weapons, textures, ect.). Unless its a server side mod, then the client would not be required to have the same files as the host. But I do agree that a download option would be nice (like Jediknight 2).

What kind of mods are we talking about here?

If you're thinking of big textures, new meshes etc., then yes - trouble.

But for the normal, current form of FL mods - edited INI files - a simple 20k PKZIP would do the trick methinks.

A *VERY* minor patch to the game made by DA would make the FL executable take INI data from the server rather than the local hard drive. Hell, through in some quick ZLIB compression (it's in the game already) to speed up the download if it gets big.

Yeah, or at the least we'd need some commandline option to specify what Data directory to use. Like for Q3 or HL mods, how you specify a +game <blah> and it uses the data files from that directory for the game. At least that way we could distribute mods and people could play on multiple servers that are configured differently.

Yeah i tried to added the anubis to he game complety modified to be strongest ship with some new equipment for sale but the moment people come in the system i am in, They get thrown bacl to the desktop .. so i guesse that plan is down the toiloet make a smal download option so the server sends the new ini files. O well i am repeating what others are saying...

i got an idea!!! would it not be cool if u can create your own pirate organisation or something! and build own bases in systems or something... would´nt that be a good ad-on to the game???

well i think it would be cool since you can make multiple of these oganazations and get faction between the players the only problem is for this to work in the it is intended you need a pretty big server

hmmmm, i think i know what you mean.. if not

like counter-strike...... when you try to play on a server which is running a different map to one you have.... it automatically downloads that map...........

but what about this..... if someone out there can make a client and server program, that some1 whos running a server has a server of it...... then a client connects the same IP(different port) of the server theyre about to play on, then this program automatically gets the ini files and replaces(and backs up) your own.
