**TUTORIAL** How to make a battleship

The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!

Post Sun Mar 09, 2003 12:58 pm

God damned... cant u all read or something? Li01_01 is Manhattan, u gotta remove one of the other ships that can be bought there BEFORE it will sell the battleship.

AND IF YOU GOT THE DEMO THIS WILL _NOT_ WORK BECAUSE U DONT GOT THE FILES!!!

Oh yeah creeper thats because he changed the "ship type" to a freigher, so it can land on planets atleast.

Regarding what creeper said, i've used the osiris dreadnaught because it can dock with the stations and dreadnaughts because i think it has the smallest model available for the battleship class (not sure). The engine/mass settings i've set should be able to let you just clear the docking ring if you go to full speed when you leave. If the docking ring gate snags you, hit the cruise engines. You'll bounce enough so that you'll end up out of the ring and into open space . As for the market bit, i'll post the whole area so that confusion will be kept to a minimum.

This should make it easier now. And regarding what jack9911 asked for, the cloak was originally placed in the standard loadaout but since decloaking is yet to be discovered by anyone i know, i have removed it. You can't decloak and thereby, cannot fire. One note regarding the docking issue, if you get the cutscene, you don't have to wait for the ship to dock cause it can't. Once you get the scene you can press escape and you'll be transferred into the station/ship. Docking made easy
By the way, has anyone found a better looking turret for the main gun? The railgun effects i've posted earlier look nice but i need a more impressive looking turret.

Oh yeah and Exocraft, the docking selection is based on this:
mission_property = can_use_berths
Shiptype seems to change the control system depending on what you put. For instance, if you put capital or cruiser as your ship type, you get some really wierd controls.

OK, awesome work, this tutorial got me a working battle ship. Now, how would I go about adding my own ships? How do you know which files corrospond with what? Basically Im asking how to make any ship I want to pilotable.

Thank you.

AcidRock, did you remember to close the captions with the other [. This forum apparently eats it up. If you didn't close the caption then its very likely that that is the cause of your problems. Try comparing the statements here with that of the thread "working cruiser w/explanations. The similarities between the both of them should be sufficient for you to find any mistakes done.

As for Kru Noctum, try going to the same thread and looking at the similarites. They should help. Also the nickname of a ship in the shiparch usually corresponds to its counterpart file in the equipment folder. For ships, its usually goods. There the engine name corresponds to engine_equip, the weapons to weapon_equip and so forth. Remember modding isn't an exact science. Its all about dissassembling what you got to find out what makes it tick.

How big cargo space those have?

Post Mon Mar 10, 2003 1:18 am

And can someone else dock to player owned battleship?

Post Mon Mar 10, 2003 2:28 am

Since i don't play mp (slow connection) i cant tell, but i don't think so. Docking seems to be specific to station or docking ring classifications. I think they classify immobile battleships without health bars as a type of station and thereby you can dock there. The current setting is as a ship classification and thereby, undockable. Oh yes, the cargo size is depicted by the line:
hold_size

could you make a dockable, moving ship?

Post Mon Mar 10, 2003 3:50 am

Maybe, maybe not. Since i don't have mp accounts due to my slow connection, this will not be a priority but i'll see what i can do. No guarantees though. I'll post the results and you guys will have to test it and give me the feedback.

God damn !! i added those "[" it seemed to work until the ship slift off and when i was to get in space.. the server where i was playing chrashed lol... its not back up yet :/
im sure i didnt make a mistake.. then i tried in SP and my FL chrashed just as the server but even before i buy the battleship ... i really dont know what i did wrong

Post Mon Mar 10, 2003 5:17 am

Could be your autosaves. Did you make some drastic changes before you implemented this system? If thats the case, you'll have to remove your autosaves. At worst, you have to hide your saves which are stored in the My Documents\My Games\ folder somewhere else and start a new game. This kind of thing happened to me too some time ago.

Post Mon Mar 10, 2003 6:02 am

Mine is not working either.

The ship appears as a purchasable item, but when I buy it, either the server crashes, or my game quits to desktop.

do you have to recompress the .ini file after editing?

I'll go through everything again and make sure I didn't goof.

Is there anyone who has it working that is willing to post, send, or host the already edited .ini files?

Post Mon Mar 10, 2003 6:21 am

same as you chiablo

Post Mon Mar 10, 2003 7:05 am

Since there is so much demand for capships right now and so many problems initialising it i'll tell you guys what. There seems to be some confusion over the installment of the mod so i'll make a brand new post with all the steps from ground up including all the steps a noob will need. It will be ready in a few hours time.
