I thought nothing could escape the black hole once it had passed the event horizon, as this is the point where the affect of its gravity is stronger than the speed of light. Which nothing can travel faster than (in a vacuum). I think all the energy is given off from pairs of particles that usually annihilate each other, where one particle gets trapped in the event horizon and the other escapes. If your sure your right, explain more.
VC- You are right in theory. Of course there is also the theory that once matter passes the Event Horzon, the point at which the strength of the gravitational pull outweighs that of the speed of light, fundamental sub-atomic processes become disrupted.
This in turn leads to the breakdown of atoms into sub-atomic particles, some of which are able to ESCAPE the event horizon due to the fact that process of disruption at the speed of light causes reactions that actually produce particles that travels above the speed of light - theoretically.
This is all way over my head, but part of what scientists are researching at places with Supercollidors, like CERN in Geneva.
All I know is that there are only two ways we can "see" black holes. Measure the effect of their bending light rays from objects "behind" them. Measure sub-atomic emissions.
Hope this helps.

A spiral disc around the black hole with lots of interesting colours, and a jet of particles at each pole, is how i think it should look.
All this Physics talk is too much for me. But i think your talking about Cheznycovh(or something like that) radiation, where particles are accelerated underwater to near the speed of light (in a vacuum). Underwater light travels slower and the particles give of a blue glow.

Funny how everyone discusses blackhole physics and noone cares about what it would do to the game
I guess they put it in because is could be made to look quite cool ... and then they put i away bacause it's not fun to have an object that effectively just kills a player when he comes too close to it ...
The black ball is about the best visual representation you could do of a blackhole, and the funnel is probably just an experiment on making it look cool ... but it couldn't just sit there, a blackhole has no sides, so the funnel couldn't point into one direction ... it would have to always be pointed directly at the player who looks at it ... that way the funnel could be a fictional visual representation of a blackhole ... but, to do that you need special code ...
Anyway, there is no gravity in freelancer and the only effect of a blackhole is gravity ... so ... again ... pointless
