Custom music

First, Happy Goldday everyone.

My question is: can you import your own music?
I don't remember reading that in FAQ.

You can, though I don't know how well it would work. Music changes depending on where you go and what is happening.

yup, when yur just cruising around you hear some slow music in the background and then when you get attacked music starts playing louder and you get a different tune too. To bad FL doesnt support MP3

remindes me of I war 2. The music changes to suit the situation. Its pretty good at conveying the sense of tension or relaxed flying around. If a game has a good sound track it really helps the game to flow even if you dont like the type of music. Thats why game like I war 2 have great music while games like mechWarrior 4 have crap music. Also telling by the tachyon video the msuic for when you are under attack is pretty good. Judging thats the music and he didnt just edit that in

alloooOo. well like... tha .wav files in tha music folder are actuallyyy a "RIFF-WAV" MP3 format. so jus look for a encoder that supports that n' you're set.

i got CDex n' with it you can convert your fav song into pure wav format.

jus click on tha 'mp3->wav' button n' convert your mp3.

n' then in tha 'wav->mp3' window check "RIFF-WAV" n' convert and everythin will be all yummyy. MMmm mMMmm

----------------HOLLLLDDD onnNNN a freakin seconnd---------------

i jus started testin this stuff out... n' Freelancer doesn't like JUS RIFF-WAV mp3s... tha RIFF-WAV mp3 has to be 80kbs and a 22,000hz sample rate..

SOOooo.. for tha 80kbs setting, jus set it in your encoder

for tha 22,000hz setting, jus load it up in a pretty coo audio editing program n' save tha song AS.. with tha 22,000hz setting. (i used sound forge)

so if you still wanna get yo fav music into freelancer.. jus make sha those things are set n' stuff. =DD

Custom music is really easy to put in the game (at least replacing existing musics right now, but I'm pretty sure you can even have new musics too, you just have to edit system/base files to change the music file it points to).

What you need is the MP3 sound codec (which should be already installed if you can hear the tunes in the game), and a program which can save a .wav file using this codec. Goldwave, Total Recorder, dbPowerAmp (free) work. I'm pretty sure a lot of others, more popular softwares, work too.
So far I chose to use the game format : 56kbits/s, 22050Hz. I'll try later to see if you can use other codecs and/or other bitrates.

So how to procede? If your software can read/convert MP3 to WAV files, just open your favourite tune file and save it as a WAV, codec MPEG Layer 3, 56kbits/s, 22050Hz. Otherwise, convert it to a regular PCM WAV file first, then to an MP3 WAV file.

Now go to Freelancer\Data\Audio\Music. Look for what music you want to change:

music_bar_br02.wav = bar music #2 in Bretonnia system
music_bar_generic01.wav = bar music #1 in any system
music_ku_battle.wav = battle music in Kusari system

Well, pretty obvious I guess. So just rename the file to something_old.wav or just delete it, and put your favourite tune there instead, and rename it properly of course.

I have already changed Bretonnia bar musics and am just looking for other good ones (not too loud or I just can't read the news ;P)

I am bumping this because I think people will *REALLY* get a kick out of it.

I am going to experiment with it myself.

Does that free program work pretty well?

Are there any things to keep in mind like sampling rates or any other settings?

Can I just take one of my .mp3 files and use one of the programs you listed to turn it into the right kind of .wav ?

Post Tue Mar 11, 2003 2:18 am

Wow. That worked great.

I downloaded dbPowerAmp (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm)

Then I grabbed an MP3 and converted it to wav using the settings:

FORMAT: MP3
Attributes: 56 kBit/s, 22,050 Hz, Stereo

Then I renamed music_bar_li01.wav to music_bar_li01_old.wav

Then I renamed my new file to: music_bar_li01.wav

It worked like a charm.

Incidentally, it looks like you can use music.ini to change where files point. So instead, I could have done this:

FILE: Data\AUDIO\music.ini

At approx. line 339:

<pre><font size=1 face=Courier>
[Sound
nickname = music_bar_li01
type = music
file = audio\music\music_bar_li01.wav
attenuation = -15
streamer = true
</font></pre>

I probably could have changed the file line to point to my new file name (like perhaps: audio\music\mymod_music_bar_li01.wav).

Thanks for the info!

I have only noticed one small problem with converting them in this manner.

They seem to need to be a bit louder to match the rest of the music in the game.

Any suggestions?

[Sound
nickname = music_bar_li01
type = musicfile = audio\music\music_bar_li01.wav
attenuation = -15
streamer = true

Hey Thresh,

I'll bet if you adjust the attenuation value, you can change the relative volumn of your .wav.

Interesting! I don't even remember posting this tread... oh, I remember now .
The easiest way: launch Freelancer, turn off music, launch winamp and load some playlist. Why to mess arround files when you can do it that way?

Mr. Death:

Why? Well, if we created a new system, with bases, combat, etc, we would *probably* want to include custom scripting for dialog. So, if we are able to determine how to change the music, we can use the same process for created the dialog between Trent and other characters, as well as have some different music that is unique to the mod we create..
