Mods needing no disc?

The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!

Post Fri Sep 22, 2006 12:40 pm

@ opwnageo, Ubisoft and Xplosiv have both licensed Freelancer from M$ and sell them in shops, but M$ being M$ they refused to allow anybody access to thier anti piracy software. This means that thier game disks don't have the hidden data and encryption that an original M$ disk has. If they had released them with the normal exe they wouldn't have worked, so they got an altered exe from M$ to allow thier disks to be used. This is what I'm talking about when I said an "official no-cd exe", none of the "budget" versions needs the game disk in the drive to work.

You have to have the CD deal.

FD I know but from what I've seen on other sites those who have a "budget" version have a CD. They bought a legal licensed version of FL and find that more than half of our mods won't work because we stuck an original exe into the mod.

I know that the original exe is whats called "wrapped", this means it's encrypted, making it harder to hack. At some stage some bright spark has managed to "unwrap" one and gave us the no-cd exe, however I'm pretty sure that you'll find that the budget exe is M$'s own version of the no-cd exe and that it will be "wrapped" to deter hacking. This will mean it's covered by the EULA, as I doubt if M$ would allow Ubisoft or Xplosiv to sell it otherwise.

**shuffles of with a new headache**

If it was not for the mod makers TLR would have been a dead site a long time ago. So would the selling of the game Freelancer, and MS knows this.

Not true, I bought freelancer for the game, not for mods.

But this thread should be locked, playing FL without the disc is violating the law.

I really don't know of anyone that has a pirated copy of Freelancer.
I have convinced several of my nephews to buy them a copy and a few friends around close to me so we could play together and chat with each other on our own server.
I really don't think Freelancer was pirated very much, I myself own 2 copies of the game one I use and one still new in the box for future use. I am going to buy Freelancer as Christmas gifts this year for several of my family members and friends. So we will have more playing with us. Freelancer is not dying it's very much alive.

Not really...
This post is aimed at everyone though, i don't want people to feel singled out for special attention - i just don't love anyone enough to do that.

You can buy the game simply and easily, and these days the versions you get will not require the disk in the drive at time of playing (Ubisoft/Xplosive). This does not mean you are playing the game illegal, and it's laughable that people imply this is the case.

There are increasing numbers of people who have these versions of the same game, all legal, all legit, and all licensed. Please stop castigating and condoning all those people because you are incapable of adjusting your points of view.
