file with the freelancer mask that exe file in your mod should make it work

In english that means that you need to put the no-cd version of the EXE in with your mod but thats illegal as its basically distributing a method of pirating...

Haven, making a mod that doesn't require having the legal CD in the tray, would not be posted on lancers reactor. At this time, the Disks are encoded to be required to play the game, making it possible to do so with out the disk violates the Eula.

I always seem to hear the "a lot of modders do it too" excuse, well, if a modder gets fined for breaching the EULA are you going to join them? If people jumped off a cliff would you do it too? If the driver in front of you speeds past a red light does that mean you should too?

The law is the law

Thanks all. I'll delete the original post, as to keep with LR regulations.

@ FD, you had better look in the downloads bud, as there quite a few mods that don't need the game disk to work.

I know of 3 versions of FL, the original M$ release that most of us old timers have, and 2 budget versions. Neither budget version has the M$ disk security system and use an official version of the no-cd exe to get around it.
If you use the exe from the budget versions your safe, it's just the old hacked no-cd exe that will cause legal problems.

To all mod makers, if you can get a hold of a budget version then please use it in your mod, as most of the new players can't use any of the mods with an original exe, the budget disk doesn't have the info the old exe needs.

Doesn't matter if its a budget version or not, unless Microsoft/Digital Anvil changed the EULA for that specific version the law is still being broken by using/distributing that exe without the copy protection.

You legally can't copy anything unless you have an original, usually only as a backup, you certainly can't distribute something like a game or something that could be used to circumvent a protection, otherwise they'd be offering the game free and would have probably released the source code.

Bejaymac, The purpose of my post is a reminder, even with the No CD version, and I have yet to see it in ANY stores, it still requires you have the disk to install. ANY other means of SHAREing the game by copying the No CD version IS pirateing, so we're back to the "You have to have the CD deal. "

Why doesn't MS just release a no cd exe since it no longer supports FL, and they aren’t making any money from it as it is no longer selling. But to bad it is does not sale good or we might have a FL2.

Anyway this forum and the server it's on is MS so if they wanted to sue someone for extending the life of a game they gave up on then they will lose money because TLR is promoting FL and more and more people are still buying it, and use mods from TLR or MS as they are one and both the same.

If it was not for the mod makers TLR would have been a dead site a long time ago. So would the selling of the game Freelancer, and MS knows this.

So to sum it up in short.
Without Mods and there makers, and TLR/MS Freelancer would be dead.

That may be true, but when it comes to big business and money, its a whole different story lol.

A friend of mine has got a budget version of FL where this no-cd thing is allready built in. What about that??

Post Fri Sep 22, 2006 9:16 am

Well, how can there possibly be a "budget" version of FL, this makes no sense to me, budget means cheaper version, and I can't grasp the thought that Microsoft would knowingly sell this "budget" version with the copy protection removed otherwise whats the point?

Can you provide me a link to such a budget version or should I just go ahead and get it from the horses mouth and ask Microsoft, I'm sure I know what their answer will be personally...

Personally I believe this "budget" version to be simply the re-distributed version of the original files just with the exe in the setup folders changed to be no-cd and sold on the internet...

Which being the case is wrong....

I'd also like you to point me to these mods that use this no-cd also...

Well any of the most D/L mods have a no-cd exe in it. I'm sure you can D/L and find out for yourself.
