Last Notes.

For those of you who do not read the Front Page... I will be sending email to BP this evening, officially announcing the more-or-less obvious, which is that I'm done with FL, and I will be providing all of the files I have done.

I will be releasing both Toolkit 1.3, the SUR Exporter Beta Plugin version that I still have, since I believe beta-testing for this is, in a practical sense, dead... and my big baby, Warriors of the Sky, Beta Two, which is not complete-able until that day when custom SURs actually work pretty well.

Toolkit is 90% done, and pretty much crash-free. The only bugs remaining are content-related- namely, one of the "little things" I talked myself into- a whole new system of ship stats for everything in FL, using XML. Anybody interested in finishing that part just needs to copy the Liberty ships' XML code and change it, after using the balancing formulae I developed to make the ships to fit your mod. I'm very proud of how I hacked up common.dll to make that work right, but it was sucking up too much of my life to finish it for 30-odd ships.

I am pretty sure I met most of my design goals, but the project kept slipping, slipping, slipping, as people requested more features, or I talked myself into doing "just one more" thing ... that invariably ended up costing me sleep for a week or three. I exhausted myself around Christmas, decided that I was no longer having fun... and now it's time to move on. I will still answer questions via email, but I'm going to mod something else now, because I just can't stand to stare at INIs anymore.

WOS B2 is not well-documented, and compared to Toolkit, it's pretty primitive in places. That said, it's really cool, and I hope somebody will poke around with it and get its flaws smoothed out. I was not happy when I stopped it, because of the SUR issues, then stopped it again because of Toolkit. It was why I started modding FL in the first place, and I am not happy that it never reached the point I wanted it to, despite the help and support of a LOT of people.

If anybody who has worked with me on content (i.e., ships, etc.) or scripting is vaguely interested in knowing what I am working with next... email me, and I will talk about it there.

Good luck on your other projects.

Is there a possibility of you returning in, say, six months or a year? Or is this a 100%, guarenteed permenant stop of you being in the FL world? Either way, I'll keep a seat warm for ya. Good luck, wherever you go.

Good luck to u Argh, you've helped me and countless others to make more sense of FL in an easy concise way which Toolkit 1.3 will continue i'm sure. I know enough to sort most problems out these days, but your threads have been most informative and hopefully helped us all

Take it easy

@Mknote:

I'll be available via email for folks who would like non-use-the-Search-function questions answered, but that's about it. I can't realistically run with more than one game engine / game team at a time, but I can answer questions until I simply forget what I know about FL modding as I fill my brain with new things.

The only real regret I have, honestly, is that I didn't release WOS B2 earlier, when it was pretty obvious that I wasn't going to see the SUR issue fixed to the extent I really needed to get it to a professional level. I received a terrific amount of help with that mod from some great artists, and it was soooo close... but not quite where I wanted it to go. At least the artists will get the public recognition they truely deserved for their amazing work

Argh you have been a great help to everyone here i think, and we will all miss you - i am saddened to see an icon like yourself leaving, and not getting to see a fully finished WOS. The toolkit mod is great, and between that and all the tutorial and development work you've contributed to the community I think we all owe you a great debt, myself especially for all your help. Good luck in your future pursuits, and thanks again for your great contributions to the FL/TLR community as a player and modder and friend

The world is changing. I am only slowly coming to appreciate the things others and especially you have done for the community. As one who just recently pulled the cd out of the closet to play an interesting game again and a newbie in the mod community I already feel that this is a great loss.

I wish you a good look and fare well. It was nice to meet you.

For those who cannot wait, here are the final releases. I have plenty of bandwidth, so don't worry about it. The News version of this will go up whenever Stinger gets around to it.

You too between you and Louva and Chips and BP and Fallen_Angel and Jsncaliff and Parabolix and Cold_Void and RedEye and Aldebaran and... and... gosh, I met a lot of nice people here. A lot. It's been real.

I think that's one of the things I will miss the most- this is, by far, one of the nicest, most helpful communities of fellow-travellers I've ever been a part of, and I've really enjoyed it. I'm sure that I'll come back in a year, find that MS finally realised how badly they'd borked things by not releasing the file format descriptions and export tools, and I'll find Freelancer modders building new and wonderful things. This has been a very positive experience for me, and I'm certainly not leaving because I'm full of angst or something

Last edit, I swear... updated my website for the first time in 9 months lol... to reflect what's actually going on, and fix the borked email addy I have up there, which I am trying to wean everybody away from.

Bye then, I hope you'll do some good with other games.

This actually makes me wish life was simpler, not directly because you leave but on my own account, life sucks quite a bit.

Or it's the slow, rythmic, tonal music I have running in the background.

RATS!

Good luck with whatever game you decide to work with next- I hope it's better supported by the publisher than FL.

BTW, I really appreciate that you gave me an opportunity to help with the Toolkit.

Your help was not in vain. Very few of the bugs documented are in this version. It was really quite clean, just not quite done. You'll see what I mean, I'm sure.

Argh TLR won't be the same without you bud, I think I speak for a lot of the people you have helped and inspired here when I say Good Luck and Best Wishes with whatever venture your now working on. Just don't be a stranger, drop by and say "Hi" from time to time.

P.S. Thankyou for releasing the SUR exporter, I've been dying for a shot of it for a while now.

I hope that, when you come back and we have made progress (like, perfecting the SUR exporter), you'll come back to us.

Live long and prosper.
