Hey Dragon long time no see,

There are a couple ways you can go at getting into modelling. The simplest program is generally considered to be Doga, but that program is very limiting as the process of modelling consists of using prebuilt parts and throwing them together. The models end up coming out a bit messy and with buttloads of reversed faces if you've used the mirror piece function in Doga. However, like I said, if you want to get a feeling of modelling interface and basic functions, you may consider jumping into Doga.

The better option, IMO, is to get to know Milkshape as quickly as possible. While many here with disagree, Milkshape is probably the best program for Freelancer modelling as it handles virtually every file format for models, is simple to use compared to most other programs, and has a very user friendly interface. It also has been made the primary .cmp exporter and even has had a .mat exporter created for it. You get one month free with the program, or for just $25 you can purchase a lifetime license for it. Now you must understand, it will be difficult at first. When I started I didn't even know how to make a triangle But with time and patience everything will start to make sense. Some tutorials also help Like the ones at this site.

For texturing you'll want to get yourself a fairly powerful image editor like Photoshop, however, if you dont have $500 to pour into a single program, and dont like pirating You can just as easily get yourself a copy of the free Gimp-Shop which is a similar program to Photoshop and will let you create some nice skins for your ships. If you need extra help texturing, you can check out Harrier's tutorial here. Harrier is one of the best modellers here and is an even better texture artist. So even if you understand texturing fairly well, you may want to have a look at his tutorial anyway.

Hope this all helps
