Simple help editing star systems

Ok guys I'm using Freelancer Explorer and erasing all systems, then creating a new one and saving it as a new mod. When I activate the mod and launch Freelancer it crashes before it gets to the menu. What am I doing wrong? I don't really care to edit much else in the game, but I'd like to make my own systems from scratch for my friends and I to play multi over lan.

Do you still have li01_01 (manhattan) in the mod? or did you change the place where you spawn from?

Post Sun Oct 16, 2005 7:36 pm

oh, no. how do I change where the player spawns?

Well, i'm guessing that you are removing the storyline (as your getting rid of the original systems). You'll need a version of OpenSp to integrate with the mod.
I think Argh is working on a cleaner version of OpenSp, which removes the storyline instead of jumping you to the end of it.
In the time being, download the most basic version of OpenSp (created by Xerx) and use that so that you can test your systems.
Within OpenSp, there is a file called m13.ini in the missions/m13 folder. You'll need to exchange this bit:

nickname = bse_initialize_init_li01<---leave this bit
InitState= Active
Cnd_True= no_params
system = Li01<------ Modify according to your starting base and system
Act_ForceLand = Li01_01_Base <------ ditto
Cnd_BaseEnter = Li01_01_Base <------ ditto
Cnd_SpaceExit = no_params
Act_SetShipAndLoadout = ge_fighter, msn_playerloadout <------ s'up to u

That should be enough to see whats happening woithin your systems. The good thing about OpenSp is that you can spawn at any base you choose, so its handy for playtesting..

If you just want a new system then don't delete any of the originals, and then the only full system that is in the mod folder is yours, only what you change is included in the mod. However if you do want to get rid of all the original systems then this may prove difficult.

and also if anyone knows how please answer my threads on how to join factions and restrict access to systems, there in this forum but i think you will have to display threads up to 60 days or summit to see them. would really appreciate any help i can get.

How come Nomads use spaceships now instead of sledges?

Try using my Alternative OpenSP, and change the line on MISSION01A.ini that refers to the starting System. Alternative OpenSP "gets rid" of the Missions, by basically making them auto-complete.

Ok I fixed the problem by starting a new mod and keeping the New York system but deleting the rest. I now have a new star system that I can go to via a jumphole near New York's star, but I have one problem with the new system. My planets are fine, you can land on them, take off, trade, everything. But my bases all crash the game when I try to launch my ship. What could I be doing wrong? (Please keep in mind I'm just using Freelancer Explorer so set it all up)

anyone?

it could be a number of things.
Maybe there is a problem with the base's loadout.
Maybe you don't have the universe entries for the bases.
Have you added trade patrols? If so they are fussy and need entries in the base's mbase file.
Can you fly from the planets and dock at your bases?

universe entries? mbase file?

I have no trade patrol traffic, just ambient traffic.

just to give you guys an idea of what I'm doing.

That's an old universe I had created, took me about 7 years of work. Now I'm working on a new scifi universe that is very loosely based off of this.

Well, you've said that your planets are fine docking-with, so you must have added their base name to universe.ini, unless you have conflicting base names.
What was the nickname's of the system and bases?
There should also be entries in mbase for each base that you have. It dosen't have to be very complicated at first, just entires for the local (base owning faction) and at least one entry for every faction who are going to trade with the base.
Mbase can get a bit messy, so you're gonna have to go through the tutorials to get the general plan of things. If you need help with any specific problems, i'm sure one of us can help.

M-A-C-E what you have to remember is kdargan is working just with FLE (shudder) and not hand editting the ini files like most of us. kdargan working only with FLE leaves you with big problems as FLE is very buggy (sry LD), and because you don't know what's what in the ini files whenever FLE screws up your mod is buggered.

Get FLScan from the downloads and use it to bug hunt your mod.

are there any system editors that work better?

Post Tue Oct 18, 2005 12:49 pm

Nope sorry, there are only 2 that I'm aware of (system editor and FLE). The only thing to do is work with them but not rely solely on them. This means learning whats in the ini files and how they work.

There are a lot of tutorials and most of us are friendly and help where we can, so if you get stuck just ask.

Welcome to one of the hardest games there is to mod, why because MS hate people messing with their stuff and haven't released any modding tools for it, everything we use has been made by people that are fans and wanted to be able to mod it.

Well, actually I use FLE for about 80% of my modding and I get on with it ok. There's a couple of things like paths that it doesn't like too much, other than that I think its a great program.
I don't think its really fair to blame the program with this one, it could be any number of things.
Kdargan, feel free to post up your entries for a few bases that don't work. It really isn't much more than "add a base in FLE" and make sure that the files are all in the right place. Just to get the bases working anyhow.
