Cargo Increaser Is it possible?

The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!

Post Sat Oct 01, 2005 11:19 pm

Umm..,

We tried this, could not get it to work without a zillion errors popping up on the console in MP followed by a server crash.. only thing to come out of it was that Freelancer does not like to be 'forced' to update on the fly.. as the ship.. has a given capacity.. and changing this is difficult.. Now it mnay be possible via XML scripts but getting it to work both server and client side is the hard part.. you can however add cargo 'pods' as buyable extras its been done but as to the mechanics.. well... it's like how sour is that lemon.. suck it and see..

@5i1:

You're mis-understanding. What I'm saying is... that the "Cargo Upgrade" will be the Armor downgrade. IOW, it's a reverse of what you're talking about- to get more Cargo, people will have lose Armor. Voila. It still works... it's logically consistant... it's just not in the order you want. Which is tough, but it's not our fault that FL's designers didn't let us use negative values for a lot of numbers...

From a code perspective... we're talking about a Powerplant, a Scanner, or whatever. It has to be a Powerplant or some other Internal hardware, because those are the only things that take up Cargo when mounted. Doesn't really matter- just go steal the Armor Upgrade code from some mod that already has this concept, and you're good to go.

So... write up a description like this:

Armor

Armor panels are composed of (make up some pseudoscience garbage here), and are initially mounted onto all ships sold in the Sirius System, with the assumption being that the fighter will be used primarily for escort/security duties. Sell your Armor panels to gain more Cargo space.

Then put a low monetary value on the Armor Upgrades, so that you're not handing people a lot of "free money"...and voila! Problem solved. Again... you're solving the problem... just... backwards. Same result, different method... and it's reversible! If people add the Armor panels, then they'll take up Cargo space!

All of that said... and please, don't take this personally, because this isn't meant to disrespect you sharing this with use... I think that, from a game-balance standpoint... armor and cargo upgrades are totally junk ideas. Why? Because in both cases, they cannot effect Mass. No Equipment, even the internal stuff, has any effect on the total Mass of a ship, period. Which means that Armor and/or Cargo upgrades are essentially "free" of any negative consequences, unless you've put in a generic value and planned out the add-on veeeeeery carefully.

Argh
Armor upgrades do have set backs they cost you money

ok now siriusly (I no thats not how it's spelled but my spelling sucks ) i really like your idea Argh and i might try it .

Here's another joke (not a very good one)

Armor panels are composed of (make up some pseudoscience garbage here), and are initially mounted onto all ships sold in the Sirius System, with the assumption being that the fighter will be used primarily for escort/security duties. Sell your Armor panels to gain more Cargo space.

I put in a system called Sirius into my mod so it would be Sirius Sector.

i got the cargopods working somewhat correctly, that is having a commodity attaches a pod and that pod holds the commodity, when its blasted off the commodity drops - - only problem is they only show up on NPCs, not players ships! grr >_< oh well, i also found a gun setting that allows you to shoot spreads of missiles that angle away from each other instead of paralleling - i think cargopods may allow us to attach expendable missiles to launchers so an uber torpedo would disappear from the launcher ammo rack once it was fired

Argh
ok i i tryed out your idea and it's works

But i had to make one for every flyable ship in the game or the ships with big cargo holds (like VHF and Freighters) wouldn't have enough cargo used up to make much of a diffrence and still be mountable on the low and ships. It also looks nicer have every ship come with a Armor thing tha takes up cargo. Then I got the Armor upgrades that cost a **** load of money but give the most increase that can only be bought in certain places.
