OK, so the mod is coming along great, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Anyway, I took the nomad torpedo launcher, spcified it as a torpedo HpType (no more mounting it on gun/missle HPs) It is EXTREMELY expensive, almost but not quite prohibitively so because it does an extreme amount of damage. There is a catch to this uber weapon... only elite ships with the heavy duty power supply have enough juice to fire it, and it will sap half to all of your power depending on whose ship you are flying. So, not a weapon you can go all willy nilly on the poor unsuspecting NPCs with, as it does not have a huge blast radius, may very well leave ships far enough away only minorly damaged (those in the blast radius are almost totally charcoal), and the thing leaves you with barely enough power to shoot at anyone for more than a few seconds... ooh, the vulnerability!

Anyway, my question is this: What would be a good explosion effect for this, something big and bright on the boom scale, but not something that is going to leave a mini-star behind forever? I am willing to rewrite whatever file I need to if I have to do so to shorten the lifespan of the effect.

Just looking for opinions and directions to where such a file might be hiding, just waiting for me to pluck it up and make it useful.

Well, we've been wrestling with that issue with the Shiva, which is basically your super weapon, except its a missile and is slightly more availible. What we have just gone with is the nomadwormholeopening effect, since 1. that certainly looks like a fusion bomb, doesn't it? and 2. Theres just nothing else that illustrates the utter power of the weapon, 3. We, or rather my weapon designer, has successfully made the "mini-star" go away after about 10 seconds or so.

You could also scale everything in freelancer to 1/10 scale, and then the explosion would look 10x as big.

We're operating on a 1/5000 scale. Gives you an idea on how big the explosions are

I did like that effect as well, though the scale.... hmmm, how would I go about *gasp* ( I know, I speak heresy) scaling the explosion down? Is that even possible?


I have tried a number of effects, I *do* like that one, but I have not suceeded in shortening the length of the visible effect.... which in a dogfight situation is very disabling. I even created a new EFT entry with a duration of everything from 1-20, but the effect always lingers permanently.... How'd ya do it?

BTW, i'm also trying to scale down effect sizes. Obviously, if i'm on a 1/5000, i'm gonna need some smaller explosions

Anyone know how to do this?
