Replacing Trent''s head

Once again one of my simple, but difficult to solve problems.

I've tried replacing Trent's head. Works fine. But in the mission sequences, when he is talking it looks more like he is chewing instead of speaking, with the jaw and the cheeks moving, but the mouth not opening. But not only in mission sequences, but also in regular talks with characters in bars.

My first thought was that the .dfm-files of the other heads were missing some animated parts. My guess is Trent's head has other animated parts at the lips then the standard bar characters. This would explain why the heads can't perform Trent's dialogues, because Trent's speaking animations use these other animated bodyparts. (They also can't just use aditional ones, because the lips are not moving at all, and not just partly.)

Or am I doing very wrong here?

Can somebody confirm this or give another explanation -- maybe even solve the problem?

What I'm trying out next is using heads from other major characters from the storyline. Cuz if the standard heads use other mouth animations than Trent, it would most likely be because Trent's mouth is supposed to be animated more smoothly. (I've compared a simple head with Trent's. A normal head has 52 parts, Trent has 83.) If so, maybe these smooth animations were also applied to other heads of major storyline characters, like Juni or King.

bingo - if you examine trent's DFM you'll find it has many more lip parts that have different names than normal heads. i've thought about how it could possibly be fixed and i can't see one other than cloning trents lips onto other characters - which would be quite an intensive process(to put it mildly) and even if it could work(which i have no idea about - it could be that you can't import new meshes to DFMs) it could produce hideous results on some heads at least - another reason i long for a new UTF editor that supports drag and drop node importing and more advanced features

If I remeber correctly, it has something to do with the wire-frames in the animations. If the head does not match the wire frames, it wont be abe to make certain things work corectly. This is the same with mixing male voices with fe-male bodies and vice versa

I just put Juni's and King's heads onto the body. King doesn't work. Juni does.

Let's think a bit... The entire model is actually saved in the Mesh-entries at the beginning of the file, the parts of the head are just some kind of links. So, would one be able to copy the needed lip-parts into the old head-model and delete the lips already existing in there? We'd have to know what exactly is defined where.

I'll try something out. Knowing King's head wont work, I'll use him for my first experiments. I'll try out what happens if you delete some bodypart entries.

EDIT:

Okay, just removing some parts in the Cmpnd-entry just crashed the game when a new game is loaded. Was to be expected...

So, judging from the designation of the animation files (there are generic facial animation files and two for Trent and Juni), Trent's exact bar dialogue facial animations only fork with Juni's or Trent's head. As these are far too recognizable, if you want your mod two play in another sector of space (like me ), one has to take other heads. As these can't be animated correctly, we need to use other animations with similar length for the dialogues. Of cource the lip sincronity will be history if this is done. Fair enough.

So we have to find the file, in which the animations are defined for Trent. Any ideas?

you mean where and how a piece of dialogue activates the animation i think? my hunch is that both the animation and its counterpart UTF message have exactly the same GCS names and thats how they're called, but i'm not basing my guess on much.

Well, I think Argh has done something in this direction (in his sexist THN topic). I think the attachment from facial animations to dialogue lines is done in a THN-script as well. If we can find this one, we could remove the facial animations that only Trent's head can do and insert some generic ones that every head can perform.
