May i ask why this would be useful to yourself?

could be used for many things... such as creating a client that doesnt require graphics for admin purposes or to make a small program that you can log into game and chat without actually playing... ofcourse your ship would jsut be docked in a base you couldnt move it. anyways theres plenty of reasons to do it was just wondering if it had been done. personally i look at it from an admin standpoint because i work 40 hour weeks and the punk players allways get on when your not around.

another reason to do this would be the infamouse bank storage some servers use a live player who keeps track of that stuff... well you could write a program that logged in a ship and was programmed to act like a bank... it could be linked to a mysql database which would let website access to stored items specifically to those servers that use a "stock market web interface" it would let players deposit/withdraw money directly threw this "bank player" that was programmed. i could probably make a big list of what you could do. and i think something like this would be good all around

Except for all the abuse that this would start that sounds like a good idea. You may even be trustworthy if you make it work, however I there will be people who will use this to cheat.

As to the chatting thing, why not use IRC or something like that?

Actually that's what I was thinking too.
I you want to just chat use a messenger service, why tie up a player slot if you're not going to play. In fact on a lot of servers now you would get kicked anyway.

I can see packet translation for a lot of other purposes though, like a 3d mapping system that Admins could use to see where everyone is on the server.

But when you can only log in between 20 and 30 players I don't think anyone is going to appreciate player slots being taken up for non player activities.
