Engines Multiple speeds

Hey, does anyone know if it would be possable to assign different c ruise speeds to each individual engine? what files would i have to edit?

Also, would i be able to create kind of a "second" cruise speed, like theres, normal speed, thruster speed and cruise, how about a warp drive as well? Im sure it would take alot more modding knowlage to do this. Any ideas?

If you lived in a world of zeros and ones, would you be a zero or The One?

cant change the cruise speed on different engines. It applies for all ships in freelancer.

Argh has a trick that will do this I think.Warp engines etc are out of the question

There is -A- Warp trick, but it's not the most fancy loking thing. It's about the reverse value - when you press 'X' ingame, your ship uses a reverse thrust, moving it backwards. Find the entry, and shove in a negative number, and when you press X, you should move forward at whatever speed - so, make it a very big negative number, and you'll move faster...

Ok, so I've never tried it (which would be why the above isn't very detailed at all) but somewhere around here is a good explanation of how to do it.

would it be possible to make the thruster work at the same time as cruise speed? That would offer another speed. (500 perhaps?)

Thanks for the replys, yeah, i figured there wasnt much i could do about it. i saw the warp engine mod but ive done that before, not exacly what i was thinking, but that reverse thing sound like it would work, i think i may know how to do it.

Uhm... I wrote a piece about that... it's called "a fascinating discovery about cruise" or something like that. Basically, you can play around with engines that eat more Power than the the Powerplant puts out while using Cruise. Then you can set Cruise to very high speeds, but players only get that top speed for a very short time period- afterwards, they're back to a lower speed that's described as a proportion of the power consumed vs. the power produced, per second * top Cruise.

It's quite possible to make this work, but:

1. I doubt if it'd work well in MP. People have reported that Cruise over 500 or so causes mad lag for some reason.

2. It'd require very clever thinking about energy-using weapons, because you'd no longer be able to "simply" balance their ROF, range, damage, etc. with the Powerplants and arrive at roughly balanced performance levels.

IOW, it's a neato idea, but it'd take a very clever game designer to make it work correctly- if you just built it as a "wow, we can do this" mod, it'd probably suck, because it'd ruin a lot of FL's game balance along the way.

This is probably a dumb question but, how come you can approach 1000 when traveling through a tradelane, but cruiseing over 500 cause lag?

Btw, I just got promoted to Cmr. Yahoo, first promotion in a year!

Trade lane is computer controlled and the server knows what direction you will go. With ordinary cruise engines you can fly in many directions.

True speed of tradelanes is 2500.

ok first, yes there is a way to get this to work. But can be a bit time consuming.

Assume Vanilla FL Cruise SPeed (300)
Assume Vanilla FL Engine SPeed (80)

now what you do is make a second engine and reduce it's speed out put (eg make it only go a speed of 40)

add this engine into your ship on top of the original one, this effect the thruster speed, basic engine speed, and cruise speed.

SO adding this second engine would give you a ship that will go:

Base Speed: 120
Speed With Thruster: 360 (my amth is wrong here i think, maybe somethign like: 300ish)
New Cruiser SPeed: 450

I know this works quite well, i used it on an old server i use to run.

Hi!

One thing Hobbes78: If you have a ship with two engines and hit the engine kill button, your ship will go into some kind of "warp" speed (1000 or so).

Therefore your solution is not really a good one, as all the players would just use this warp speed to travel and did not need cruise anymore. Besides this makes exploring way too easy and is therefore not really a good thing for mods.

Sorry, but Cruise speed is really limited to be the same for all ships.

Basically, ships should not have more than one Engine. If you want to make additional "booster" engines equipable, then you're going to need to make the linear_drag of the ships higher, which in turn will negate engine kill. There isn't a good way around that- you either do that, or leave your mod easily exploited.

In most cases, it's better to just alter the max_thrust of the Engine the ship's equipped with. Simpler, less buggy... and it doesn't hose engine kill.
