A really nice, useful...glitch

Okay, here's a new one on me. I've been modding now for quite sometime, and I have never encountered this little, nice, glitch.

While I was creating new factions....which I have done succesfully in the past, I somehow....was able to change my call sign from Freelancer A1-1 to Navy A1-1. Blew me away when the docking ring at Manhattan called me Navy A1-1, and when the Police Patrols stopped me to scan my cargo called me Navy as well.

Well, I searched high and low and have no idea how I did that or am I able to recreate it....it's a nice touch, but does anyone have a clue how this is done? I wouldn't mind calling myself Zoners A1-1

Well... since we know it's possible we can investigate

Post Sun Feb 06, 2005 8:34 am

Well, I think I narrowed it down to the Empathy ini. I've been tinkering with it but I can't seems to get it right....

could you email me the mod? i've been looking round the inis (much to boss's disgust as i'm on work time ) but can't see what would change it...

edit :
[Sound
msg = gcs_refer_faction_player_short
duration = 0.692064
attenuation = -6
Priority = -6

entries like this in voices_space_male.ini & voices_space_female.ini...
now gotta find what they reference - i assume one of the entries in the .utf files...

Ooo, that is a nice glitch Yeah, we need to find what you did - that's something that I have wanted to do for a long time, but I have not been able to figure it out ...
It might be a sound entry, or it might have to do with the allegiance of the new player ..? I'm not sure, but I think we should investigate

Actually, now that I thought about it, it probably does have to do with teh faction_refer sound, bucause that's what it asks for when you make new factions, bases, and systems. So players and NPCs are teh same, right? I think they are...

Well, hey, while we're talking about faction-references: is there any way to record the name of a base or new faction so that when you hail NPCs and they say I'm from the - system. I headed to the Tau-23 system, they don't just leave the name out because they don't have a refernce for the system? Is there a way we can make new system and base refernces?

looking at the entries in the .utf files there are lots of .riff audio files with crc numbers instaed of names. volunteers to translate the msg = <blah> to the crc of <blah> so we can change it?

I guess we could make extra .utf files with our own entries like we make new images for news in the .txm files...

What I found that was different, from my stand point, the only thing I could see, was that the empathy ini file had somehow forced the first entry, the [group lead tag into the locked gate section, and it became part of it. The second thing I noticed that all my new games started, with OpenSP mod activated, lost it's first entry in the file. Meaning, using Ioncross character editor, looking at the saved game file, the first empathy group entry, the very first listing, was blank. It showed a value, but not faction.

Next, no factions showed up in the editor, the entire list was missing. None. I got a run script error 30 when I tried to use it, as in make all factions friendly, and it crashed. No factions could be read. Also, I could not load into play any saved games. This means, as you know, you can load saved FLgames from any other location. It would crash the game if I tried to load the game from the load game menu.

I believe that somehow, I either deleted the "freeelancer" voice flag or replaced it with a Navy voice flag, when I used the editor. However, when I tried to duplicated it, I couldn't get it to work. That's where I get stumped.

As I'm looking at the empathy ini, I get the impression that there may be something there that triggers the call in the voice files, or utfs. Now, if the first entry in the faction empathy ini, being corrupted and (as discribed above....) is missing, then perhaps that would cause the file to "default" that faction as the "freelancer" id for the voice file? I was called Navy A1-1. The missing entry for the group was Navy (the li_n_grp).....( 1+1= Navy A1-1? )

If you guys can figure out how to do this, make a tutorial for everyone else.

I would help but i know nothing about factions.

Post Sun Feb 06, 2005 12:54 pm

Well, I know it can be done...using the tools available....my son has been bugging me to repeat the glitch ever since he heard it himself....so, yea a tutorial will be written cause I have a feeling it's a thing many people want....

Quickshot made a tutorial about how to create new voices (bases, ships, factions) about one and a half years ago.

My voice sounds so crap that I never bothered, and it doesn't sound right intercutting between one voice and another.

You will have to register at his site, and then its under a section qsd or something - articles.

ho! Hey thanks Chips....as soon as I get back from an Airport run...( wife leaves on a Biz trip, allows Husband to drink beer,eat pizza and play/mod Freelancer till eyes implode....)....I'll check it out....

Post Sun Feb 06, 2005 4:49 pm

Okay, I've read thru the tutorial by Quickshot....I understand it. However, what faction tag does "freelancer" have....example, Navy has li_n_grp, Police have li_p_grp...etc....If I knew that, I might be able to track it down better.....
