In-Flight Mounting?

Is it possible to mount and unmount a ship's components while in-flight? It would be nice to be able to change out your shields based on what faction's territory you're entering, without having to find a safe place to dock first.

From what I understand, no, you must be on a base/planet to activate/swap weapons. Sorry.
