.DAT FIle editor

Where can I get a decent .DAT file editor. The ones i found through google are rubbish.

The DAT files I want to edit are a little more complex than usual so note/wordpad just brings up lots of little squares.

Where are the Dat files from?? Many many programs use dat files, all with different formats. The .dat extension is very common.

The .DAT files are for my new frelancer mod (long story). I think they were orginally pulled from Battle Engine Aquila (not by me).
