A one-system universe?

Wouldn't it be a good idea (particularly for multiplayer) if there was a mod that had only one really really big system (no jump gates)? Everything would be more close-knit and essentially more dynamic.

I posted a while ago about a "Star Fox" skin, and that gave me the idea a sufficient one-system universe could be emulated to the "Lylat" system which the game revolves around. I don't know the specifics, but it could have 1-2 suns, 6 plants, 8 nebulaes, and as many bases as the imagination can muster. No jump gates would be required.

Of course, that's just one strech of the imagination. I would imagine the one-system universe to contain any creative format someone can think of.

problem is that the size of the systems in Freelancer s limited. No way could you fit all that stuff in one system.

Well, it may be a little impractical to create using FLexplorer, but the system radius could be at LEAST 300K. I think that's plenty to fit that all in there.

Remember, the "star" in the Unknown system from Omicron Gamma is like 270K from the jumpgate.

But the key to good system making is to not compress everything to much. Yes, a lot can fit in a 300k square area, but for what you are talking about, It migth be a little crowded. I have played Starfox myself and from what they had in the game, you might not be able to fit it all in.

Oh, and I never use FL Explorer.

however impractical it may sound it is actually (IMHO) a good idea. however that is a good point about 300K being to small, simple solution: make it bigger.

i would say 500K - 1mil should be good enough.

and if your gonna moda 1 system universe, do the system to mimic our own solar system, including the most prodiminant moons of the planets, like the moons triton & titan.

you would only really need 1 or 2 fields, and the rest would be jim dandy fun battles in open space

Bad news: the planets are not visible at more than 250 k. And then if you get within this 250 k reach, they just pop up. And they are not that small they are only a point. It's annoying.

There is one little thing: the wobble problem. If you get too far out from the centre of the system, your craft starts to wobble uncontrollably. This takes hold at about 200K. It would make it very hard to conduct ANY battles outside that range, because ships would be all over the place. However, if that can be worked around, I think it's a good idea

If you are playing on external view, the wobble problem doesn't really affect much (from my experience). As for the "disappearing planets", we can put nebulaes in between large gaps between planets so that they don't "pop-up".

This map is certainly going to be a lot more crowded, but that can be a very good thing! It will be a lot more dynamic, and it would be great for multiplayer. All players will be close to each other and interact more often, and server police can reach scenes very quickly. And, of course, you can tweak that one system to fit any particular needs in relevance to problems in size. I just think it would be great to fly in the midst of trade and piracy and battles and bases everywhere.

Sounds like great fun to me. Have to have some uber dense nebulae in there I reckon. Parts where yor scanner won't reach at all. Make it a lot better for piracy, etc... Work especially good if near a major tradelane or trade route, since then you'd have a hell of a time making a decent trade run safely if you can't tell what's hiding in wait.

This was my example. It seems to me this can be created with plenty room to spare for bases, asteroids, mines, piracy, and other miscellaneous activites.

And of course, this is an idea that can be altered, streched, and modified to any extent of the imagination.

Hmm i also made a very very large system, more like sectors (exemple: A1) that have only a hight of 300k. Imagine how big the whole system is!! But there come some problems with them that are also mentiond above by other people.

- You dont even see planets/objects over a very large range
- Your ship cockpit starts to shake around when to far from the centre
- In SP the large system works fine with only the minor bugs mentiond above.
In MP it is a different story, when you make the system to large and you jump
to it then boom!!! Your ship just explode I think there is a max border set
for MP, im still testing around a little where that border lies....
