About editing, whay are all systems straight???

you know what i mean!
A system has to be non straight!! they were lazy! only the nomad gate entrance is round! what is with that?

*edit* - no all caps subject line please

well, lazy not not, doesnt matter (there are a few variations in the z-axis but u are right, in general they are in the same plane)

my guess is that they did this because of the 2D nature of the navmap.
2D navmap -> mostly 2D systems. and its easier for n00bs.

if you look in tau-37 it has a sun way up high.

In the real universe, because of the nature of the galaxy, and a force called gravity most systems of planets sit on the same plane. But it may not be on the x axes. The only time you would have planets not on the same plane would be when you have a large gas giant or dwarf that was a on a different plane affecting planets with its gravity. This is referred to as rouge and it doesn't happen that often 1 out 1,000,000,000 have a rouge dwarf and out of that only 1 out of 10,000,000 are on a different plane. So a linear map as you call it is not out of the norm. It would make sense to have man made objects on the same axes as the system. It they were not build on the same axes gravity over time would put them on the same plane.

You are all right. I know that. But in a real universe there is not alot of possebility for a strate sistem, the universe is round like a sphere or a ball so matter expands in all directions.
DID YOU KNOW THAT MOST OF THE SISTEMS IN OUR UNIVERSE HAVE MORE THEN ONE SUNS!
I READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT THIS AND THERE IS A SISTEM WITH 6 STARS!!!!!!!!
SPINING IN 2'S AROUND A CENTRAL GRAVITY AREA.

@General, you do know that all caps is the same as yelling and it is very rude to do so. You can make a point with out shouting.

If you don't like the 2d nature of the systems, edit 'em to be 'more' 3d - or make your own new ones.

You are right about the CAP, sorry
Maby I will edit my own sistems

My 1/2 cent!

Just keep in mind that a fully 3d system would be very difficult to find things in. For example, a base 45 k "up" without a tradelane would be difficult to find even if you know where it is. The problem is that the game doesn't really support the Z axis in the navigation system. Now, if there was a way to add a directional heading monitor to the HUD, then it would be alot more practical. As of now, there is no real way of knowing for sure what your current heading is, and so an error, of lets say 2 degrees, over 45 k would put you way off course.

But it would certainly add a degree of difficulty to the game!!

I know what you mean, but you can build a trade lone on axis Z, in Evolutions mod I saw that, in the Florida sis'. It is possible.

Olso, I beleive that in freelancer 2 if it will be exist, will have a 3d nav map, and more good graphic and BIGGER PLANETS!

Post Mon Apr 12, 2004 11:12 pm

I actually wouldn't know about that.
User friendliness was a big pro in Freelancer. I doubt they will make Freelancer 2 less user friendly as they obviously got some nice sales off Freelancer.

And the planets, do they need to be bigger? They aren't aiming for realism.....

trade lanes on the z axis would kinda negate the purpose of using the z axis. I figure that the best advantage of using the z axis would be to make things hard to find and difficult to navigate to and from.

Six stars in a system would be cool to see in freelancer. I think your missing the point yes the universe is spherical but individual systems all the planets will be in the same plane
All the planets will orbit on any of the axes, example earth and all the planets in the sol system orbit on the x axis. But you will rarely have a system that has orbits on more then one axis. IE earth on the x and mars on the y. Gravity prevents this. Even the great Microsoft is subject to the laws of physics.
I know what your saying why didn't they make a system on the y axis or z axis, because there is no real need to. If everthing is on the z axis then to a player it might as well be the x axis. More of a head ache to the programs then need be.

Centrifical force ... and gravity... are what cause the universe to be planer in nature.
but realism wise freelancer is far... far from it....

but other than planets stations... ship locations etc... can be up or down as you want.... and still be realistic...
