A brain teaser for all modders:

So, Been modding a while, and recently gone bald

Here goes:

Usually when you find a crash in a system where you haven't been editing the system itself, so no changes there, you then comment out all the faction = lines so that you don't get any NPC's spawning (typical faction_prop/loadouts/npcships cockup points crash problems). So due to having recently been fiddling, i did that as usual, settling down for a long debugging session (last time it ended with finding one of my formations had mysteriously disappeared by itself - that took best part of 5 hours to figure out).

Anyway - still crashed. I got curious, swapped my system file for original one - still crashes.

Hmm - so it crashes with no npcs............and original systems. I loaded up a different system instead, launched = crash.

Hmm

So, same crash in ALL systems, NPC's or no. Actually - not true, there had been NPC"s in the systems. I hadn't cocked up EVERY ship loadout and more.

So i got annoyed, and commented out the encounter = lines

It worked

I uncommented them out = crash

Commented them out = works again.......strange hmm

So WITHOUT any npc's spawning, just having encounter = area_scout, 19, 0.1 would cause a crash (or any others for that matter).

So i commented some out, and kept others..........still crashed, ANY Of those lines = crash.

They are NOT modified, and nor are the other things

So has anyone got any thoughts about what this might be, cause its got me stumped

For the record, reinstalls, and other things have been done to death already, trust me.........I know how to debug , but anythoughts about what might be causing this?
(lol - not usual i have to ask for help - but this is the strangest thing ever )

First find a large hammer and beat on the computer a few times Seriously though that doesn't make much sense unless some files are missing from your install but a reinstall should have fixed that. A file could be locked so that it won't be replaced by the installer and may be currupt.

So if you have tried running the original verison of the game, ignore this, otherwise see if there are crashes with a totally unmodified game that is just installed, that way you know weather it is an obsceure modification you made or a problem with the install files. Just a thought.

Other than that, I can't think of anything that would cause a crash no matter what system you were in, unless you modified some file used no matter what system you are in, can't think of any though.

I know - it makes no sense - have gone back to last working version (lost 3 days of stuff) as backtracking did me no good

... ok, smack me if you've already done this...

but have you taken your freelancer settings/saves folder from my documents/my games/freelancer and moved it? or deleted it? between installs? it could be a bad setting somewhere in the settings thats causing you to have issues...

i was crashing for a while last week, and a reinstall didn't fix it, so i moved the settings. worked great after it generated itself a new settings file...

as i said, smack me if you've already tried it.

have tried this...

1. Reinstall FL <--- i know you done that already
2. Delete all saved games and start a new one...
3. did you edit your peroption.ini or something...
4. must be that new faction thing that you did...
5. incompatibility <--- guessing
6. i give up.... must be your mod ...

sounds like when it is trying to access the encounters = subroutine it is crashing a good way to test it would be to un-comment out everything else but the encounters section then try it out... if it works then there is something wrong with the encounters, if not then it is something that interacts with encounters but is not in that section, could be in another INI even. if it runs with everything else uncomented then you will have to trace where the encounters initiate from then check if there are any errors in those files.

Thats the beauty of it, when all encounters commented out (just encounter = goes to ;encounter = ) it works, HOWEVER, there are NO NPC's set to spawn in the system anymore, so putting it to encounter = means that NO npcs would spawn - and then it crashes. It doesn't matter WHERE in the system you are (in or out of zones - i moved base 200k UP). Better yet, its the games own encounters

Oh - and don't worry about suggesting reinstalls folks, i am the bloomin king of that stuff :p - reinstall, getting rid of save games (only really interferes with startup crashes though, due to finding incorrect/missing ships/equipment in save games compared to actual files), missing files etc.

Nearly re-done most of it anyways - so its not a problem anymore, just the most puzzling crash i have ever come across...

I have a problem with crashes as well not as extensive but this code always crashes I think it may have to do with asteroid feilds? Some code is repetative because I used FL Explorer once and things went rather a miss

Well, there are so many errors that i can see in there, that its not funny.

Next_ring = three times running? (last entry)

vignette_type = exclusion multiple times

I have a thread all about system crashes, i suggest you use it, you will sort it out in no time. Its in tutorials forum, called *Debugging, find answers to crashes*

As you can appreciate, I cannot go through others files for every system that is made and crashes. That would be a full time job, and i mean full time. My post was more of a "speculate if you like over this bizzaa and crazy crash that should literally be impossible " - whereas yours is definately fixable

Check that thread, and work through it. What you have posted is so long that it could take us ours to disect (other people do know how to do this, I don't think i am the only one ), so they may post, but I can only say "head ye to the tutorials forum" There should be a link from Stingers Sticky to my thread, if not i think there is a link from the bottom of my sticky instead.....

Multiple line entries is an error in FLEXP. It automatically repeats the last line when you update the file but it doesn't have any negative impact that I know of. As for the crashing thing the only other idea I have is that your cd is going bad and some files were installed in a damaged state, this is highly unlikely but not impossible.

Chips, remember my problem that hold me (and Exceclia mod development) up for a month?

i couldnt fix it (couldnt find my error), i guess it was the same as u had, at least it looks very similar.
I reworked the whole thing from scratch, this time more carefully and step by step, then it worked.

my guess is that its a npcships - faction_prop issue, at least i believe that this was the reason for my crash. even when a single entry is wrong there the game will crash on launch, thats what i experienced.

I can honestly say that Freelancer has gremlins.

Really, it does! I've had the game crash for no apparent reason too. The last time it took offence to my modding was a month ago, after I'd added some new weapons to the equipment.ini. They worked fine for a day, and then for some reason the game kept crashing as soon as it got to the Freelancer logo screen after the three intros. It didn't even manage to reach the starting menu! I tried reloading and reset-reloading many times but still the same result. It could have taken me ages to work out the root of the problem, but on a hunch I just replaced the equipment.ini with the unmodded original, because it was the last thing I'd altered... and voila, the game loaded fine. I checked my new weapons in the modded .ini, and there were no problems with them. Syntax all correct, links to models and FX all correct, they were totally fine. And I STILL don't get why it made the game crash mid-way through start-up, not actually in-game! Or why the weapons worked fine for a short time then started causing problems! I've re-added them in now, and they work perfectly. I just don't get it at all.

It's gremlins, I tell you. The little green bastards are rampant throughout the hard-code EXE of Freelancer, just waiting to cause problems...
