Editing Problem - Corrupt File? - Confused

I'm one of the people who have found Mission 6 - Race with Hovis to be impossible, for whatever reason.

The posting "Race with Hovis - this is how to skip race and continue mission" seemed the answer to the question; do I get to continue the game or do I use the CD for skeet shooting. However, I'm having a problem with modifying the M6.ini file. I dled the Ini Viewer v1.3 and couldn't manage to edit the file, program would identiy a run-time error and crash to desktop when I would try to just load M6.ini.

My first reaction was that the Ini Viewer had problems, but today I have been experimenting and it manages to successfully load up all kinds of .ini files, just not M6.ini.

Could the M6.ini file off the HD and off the origianl CD both be corrupt? The program is running normally with this .ini file. And I also tried reading a M6.ini file copied off the original CD, with the same crash problem.

As a total novice at this and just for the heck of it, I used the edit function of WinCommander to go into the M6.ini file. The first part was the usual gobbledegook, but there was also a lot of text. I was able to find the phrase that needed to be changed to complete the race, although NOT in the same context, and pasted the change over it. I then rebooted. I still had the mission to launch and race Hovis. But once I launched - and there was a 'Loading' event - I was just in space outside the BB Hood with no race to run, no Hovis and no rings. Sigh.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I just got this game and it is REALLY addictive. I want to run through it once 'vanilla' and then mess around with some of the many, many goodies available. But right now I'm totally blocked.

Try Freelancer SDK by EOA Players consortium. It contains all the ini files pre-decrypted for you, and some bugs fixes to the originals that DA team made. Most of hte new mods on the front page will have links to the SDK - so look for any mod (that is a mod, not a program ), and you should find the download link. Personally - i install it to my spare HDD and then copy the files across when i need them (usually cause i am fiddling with files and cannot be arsed to reverse what i have done, so easier to use that as my backup! lol

Have fun

Thanks for the info.

I spent some time putzing with my problem last night and the prob seems to have been the BWS INI Viewer v1.3. For whatever reason it was unable to load any FL .ini file, not even a virgin copy off the original CD. Once I installed the INI Editor by Tinyfish I was able to start doing some 'customizing'. I found that I needed to change the variable in three places rather than the one place that was stated, but I got it to work and Hovis is now just a bad memory. Never done this before, but Hovis had me completely stopped.

Looking forward to playing with all the goodies once I get through the vanilla campaign!
